whats the difference between rimfire and centrefire

Recommended Posts

A Rimfire weapon only pinches the rim of the ammunition to detonate it.

A Centrefire weapon strikes the centre of the ammunition(primary charge),the same as most shotguns.

Not sure if you get a rimfire shot gun, would be nice to know but i've never seen one.

Hope this is of help,Jim.

That's it basically....a rimfire firing pin hits the edge of the cartridge case where the primer is carried and a centrefire pin hits the percussion cap primer in the centre of the cartridge, powders and power are a lot different in each as well as calibres.

Rimfires tend to stop at .22 and 40g (there is at least one at 60g though) and around 350ft lb.....centrefires do have some small calibres, but powers is dramatically higher, minimum is usually around 450ft lb up to around 15,000ft lb.......just to give you an idea and a generalisation!

You can get .22 rimfire shotshells or 9mm Flobert rimfire shotshells. Both pretty poor above 10 yards.
