Holdaway 2
I have a couple of databases here, one for vermin control, one for pest control and they are both rubbish. So...I am going to write my own. Does anyone have any suggestions for fields they would like to see in a database? Apart from the obvious name, address, tel...etc. Once completed this database will be free to anyone who wants it, so the more feedback I get the better it will turn out. It can be used to monitor vermin and pest catches, areas, clients, products used, type of treatment, etc. Looking forward to some feedback. All the best H Quote Link to post

Foxy09 3
Can you explain what use it will be...... The idea is mate that you put all your info into a database for everyone to see....what your doing, where your doing it...how your geting on...who your clients are and all.....then everyone can come and join in and put you out of business!! No wonder all the others are rubbish its the most ridiculous idea ive ever heard. Foxy Quote Link to post

I can see it being of more use to the 'hobbyist vermin controller' than a pro pester. As for other people being able to see it, how? The idea is not a new one. You create an access based database, and keep it on your computer. I'm certain that Holdaway is not suggesting a web based database. As I say, this is not a new idea. I recently passed on a link to Trapworks for a freebie database (I think it was from Arthur Carter), but as he says, it's not great. Think of it as a game diary, and then make some suggestions of what you'd like to record Quote Link to post

Some people find it useful to keep records of previous jobs, customer location, telephone numbers, eqipment used, etc. The only people to see your info are the ones you let see. H Quote Link to post
glass22 0
You would be best to make a website that did this, with user logins, then the data stored on the web.(private or public) Quote Link to post
Netter 0
You would be best to make a website that did this, with user logins, then the data stored on the web.(private or public) I think people are missing the point here, The database would be for personal use, kept for your own reference. glass22 0
No. I meant so anyone could login and have their own private database accessible only to themselves via the web. Quote Link to post
Matt 160
No. I meant so anyone could login and have their own private database accessible only to themselves via the web. Why would anyone go to the expense of running an online database which would have security issues? What Trapworks are offering to do is to produce an access based database, which would be available for anyone to download free of charge, to record their success or failures. Now we've established what is on offer, has anyone else got any ideas what they would want out of a record of their trapping etc? Quote Link to post
John Keswick 119
Wouldnt it just be easier for people to use microsoft exel and cut out the middle man? Quote Link to post
Fidgety 8
Matt, are you and Holdaway linked in this?? "Wouldnt it just be easier for people to use microsoft exel and cut out the middle man?" Maybe, but sometimes it's better to thrash out an idea in an open forum to get the most workable result - besides, I'm crap at excel! Quote Link to post

Matt 160
Wouldnt it just be easier for people to use microsoft exel and cut out the middle man? You could do that, but excel has limitations. It would also be alot of work, which Holdaway is offering to do. Matt, are you and Holdaway linked in this?? No, but I sent him a copy of one of the freebies, and we discussed how it could be made better. I know David, and know that he's a bit of a computer buff (as well as being bloody good with wire). Maybe, but sometimes it's better to thrash out an idea in an open forum to get the most workable result - besides, I'm crap at excel! Exactly. So far no-one has actually suggested any fields they would like!! I'll give some ideas about what I've already suggested: Date Place Species Sex Trap type Comments Quote Link to post
gollum 1
Hi, My excel sheet has the following fields: Day, Date, Time, Estate, Location, Specific location, Weather, Method, Mileage, Ferrets, Catch, Quarry, Observations, Butcher, Game Dealer, Freezer, Costs. This is then linked to other sheets that chart the data in various ways and give me running totals etc. Looking back at your data can be a very revealing exercise. HH all. G. Quote Link to post
