BBC NEWS REPORT 23 FEB 2009:

 

A secret blog was a key tactic in a plan to snare badger baiters who enjoy watching dogs tear badgers apart, an animal charity has said.

 

The Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said its blog proved crucial in uncovering the secrets of badger baiting.

 

It quickly became accepted as an all-Ireland forum, the charity said.

 

As people bragged and posted pictures of badgers being mauled, the USPCA said they watched and learned.

 

So-called "badger diggers" shared information about how they could escape detection. The animal welfare charity was tracking every word.

 

The website was set up as part of an investigation into badger baiting across Ireland carried out by the USPCA and the Sunday Times newspaper. The blog is now closed

Stephen Philpott, chief executive of the USPCA, said the blog was "key" to uncovering the truth about badger baiting.

was anyone listening to it on the radio this morn they said they got the footage while pretending to be interested in buying a dog off them could be wrong a friend was only telling me some irish fallas should of heard it

They were phoning boys up who had dogs/pups for sale and boys were telling them everything about the dogs,what they did who bred them etc etc

i heard the whole thing on the radio stupid fellas selling dogs and telling complete strangers over the phone exactly what the terriers were doing.People too interested in selling dogs to care what happens to rest of us

The site was infiltrated was the DFL [dig for life] but from scotland to cork to londonderry everyone knows those involved and its the same names keep appearing.WORST THING TO EVER HAPPEN TERRIERWORK IN IRELAND

it allways surprises me how much info people are willing to share over the phone with someone they know nothing about. quite a few times when phoning up about dogs theyll tell you the dog takes this,that and the other just to secure a sale. hopefully whats gone on in ireland will be a kick up the arse to everyone and make people engage brain before tounge when talking to strangers,i very much doubt it though.
