Ferret Castrated

I had my neice phone me up today. She had a couple of hobs off me last year to keep as pets and her plan was that she would save up and have them castrated. She phoned her local vets and they quoted £35 each so she booked them in for last thursday. She had a phone call saying that the testes on both hobs had gone back inside their bodies and that the total bill had now changed to £311 because of the work involved. I told her not to pay it because they had quoted her but she had already paid it. The vet also said that hobs do not come into season....... I told her to get another vet. Has anyone else experienced this????

she couldnt refuse to pay ,but it sounds like the hobs hadnt come into season yet ,bloody expensive though i would tell her to find a different vet

One of my hob's had a vasectomy last week. The vet specifically asked me to make sure the assisistant could find his testes when i took him in the morning, to be sure that a problem like this didnt occur. It's simple enough, if you can feel them and see them clearly hanging then the job is on, if not then I was advised we would reschedule. In my case (the ferrets i mean) there was no problem and they went ahead and i got him back same day, very neatly sewn up and none the worse for the surgery. 2 follow up visits scheduled, 1 the following day and the next a week later. Neither of which were charged for! My total bill was £53. Sounds like your vet doesnt know anything about ferrets, and wasnt humble enough to admit it! Mine was honest enough to say he wanted to check his facts first! Good man!

 

I would speak to trading standards and ask if you have a claim against them. As far as I know if they didnt advise you that the cost might be higher, then they should have contacted you before doing the surgery unless there was a life threatening condition to consider.....

 

If i quoted a land owner £50 to get rid of his rabbits and then put in a bill for £300 I would not expect to get paid!

what a robbing :realmad: :realmad: :realmad: i wouldnt of paid it had a problem with my dog a while ago wrong diaginoses bill was £140 when complained they knocked it down to £ that was daylight robbery what they done to the lass if they were a good vet they would of waited till there balls dropped

In my opinion the vet should have spotted the lack of testes before getting them on the table & under anesthetic

something similar happened to me a couple of years back , but the vet only charged about £4 extra

 

just to add , i,m sure if the a quote was given and there was extra work or the bill is going to be almost 10 times the quote, the customer should be consulted before the extra work is carried out, i think she should be consulting trading standards

Bad practice she's went to there .The pre-op check should have been done by the vets to make sure things were in place.She should'nt have paid the extra because it was'nt her mistake.Might be worth her seeking legal advice to see if she can claim the extra cash she's had to pay out through incompetence of the vets ...

Sounds like the vet didn't check they where in season first no chance both hobs where rigs as they both had both balls up

in the building trade a quote is the price u will do the work, an estimate is a rough guideline if this was aquote seek legal advice

youd be surprised how little some vets actualy know about ferrets.i took a new jill i got last year to the vet for a cheackup and he told me she was pregnant,few weeks later she was in season..i then went back to inquire about jill jabs which the vet had neer heard of and when i explained what they were she had the nerve to laugh at me for saying ferret jills cant bring themselfs out of season.i recived a phonecall 2 days later tho with an appology .same vet quoted my 60 euro to casturate a male and told me she wudnt be able to vasectimise my him as there "bits" were too small.think its time to find me a new vet
