I was always put off with the recoil but with the mod it was not bad and this is my problem now i am in two minds about the 308 they seem both very similer in how flat they fly depending bullet weigth but the 308 has a far larger choice to choose from and easier to fine tune when i start reloading myself .But i am sure fine tune the 270 will be just as good . You will get lots of you need .243/30.06 as they are better answers , but its down to what you like what rifles that fit what you want and if the chambering is offered in that rifle. Next is ammo and what you can get and where ? if you are going on the range then the cost of ammo comes in to it [ mil surplus] Another thing is the recoil ! have you shot a .308 of the same spec as the .270 ? only then can you feel the recoil difference. Less is better for NOT developing a flinch. Which ever you chose will do the job of putting deer on the grass with ease. Quote Link to post

This is true not to worried how flat they fly it just a mate saying the 270 would be better. I have not looked at a 30.06 yet i am still at the looking stage just now . I really don't now on what one to go for ?. hi mate, i have herd alot of people i know advising to stay away from the 270 as it can be a beast of a round when it comes to recoil (some may like it though but its down to personal preference. i would advise either the .243 as this will take down anything with the correct shot placment and bullet weight, i would also highly reccomend the 6.5x55, i have shot this reccently and cant fault it. SportingShooter 0 Posted February 21, 2009 Report Share Posted February 21, 2009 A few questions need to be answered I think. What species are you going to be shooting with it mainly? If its a Muntjac then a .243 would suffice perfectly, if Reds, then a .243 would still suffice, but perhaps something a tad larger would be better. And is it going to be purely a Deer rifle or did you intend to use it for Fox as well? The .270 is a strange round by all accounts, Ballisticians are fascinated by what draws people to a round that is in between everything else in its group of calibres and has a fair amount of recoil and flip. It certainly flattens Deer, it is a flat round with the right load, and a fast one to boot. A slight tendency to do more meat damage than most. The .308 is a very popular calibre for stalking in the UK, not quite as popular as the .243 but getting there. It has the power even though a much slower round than the .270 or .243 The trajectory on a .308 is considerably steeper than a .270 due to the heavier bullet and the speeds it is pushed at. As has been said, try as many as you can and find a rifle that you like. Most large calibre rifles are chambered in .270 and .308 regardless of Model or Make. SS Quote Link to post
