mooster 1
I was brought up in the country and loved ferreting but never had one of my own. We had to move into town when I got married 25 yrs ago as we couldnt afford to live in the country. There is a God by the way because 5 years ago a stray albino jill arrived in my back yard....we made friends and she moved in! She was the friendliest ferret I ever knew and when we finally went rabbiting together she was unbeatable. I could not believe the feeling of achievement when she bolted her first rabbit. She gave me two healthy litters as well as countless rabbits and became a real good companion.A bit like a dog I suppose...they don't care what mood you are in but will always come out to greet you rain or shine. Well,I never knew how old she was and last year her teeth started dropping out, then her tail went bald, then her claws went thick and fell out and she started to loose weight. She did not respond to antibiotics or medicated shampoo prescribed by a vet .She developed a sneeze/wheeze recently so after lots of heart-searching I took her to a different vet who took one look and confirmed what I already knew...our partnership was over and I was about to loose one of my best mates. She had a defective liver and was beyond treatment. I buried her in one of her favourite hunting fields and found it hard not to cry. I've kept one of her jills and have another jill and they are starting to work well as a team but I will never forget those first outings with my old friend Poppet. Here's to you "poppet" R.I.P. Hope you guys don't mind me sharing a bit of a sad story but helps to get it off your chest! Here's to next season with the new team. Cheers all,Mooster. Quote Link to post

Coatesy900 0
It sure is sad, but not worth losing any sleep over. Animals die, you just have to be man enough to not let it effect you. Some things are out of our control and we just have to get on with it as there is nothing we can do about it. Shame that is mate. Quote Link to post

It's got nowt to do with being 'man enough'. Nothing wrong with being sad over the loss of a good worker and friend. I'm sure Mooster is getting on with it and as a hunter he obviously understands that animals die- but that does not mean that death can't be upsetting. Mooster, she sounds as though she was a good little stinker- sorry she's gone onto the happy hunting grounds. Quote Link to post

droid 11
Good post, mooster, and an excellent counterpoint to 'The Other Thread'.... There's nothing 'unmanly' about caring. Quote Link to post

Thats a bit harsh, the guy is merely expressing how he felt about loosing a loyal worker. nothing un manly about that. Do you own a bull cross? Quote Link to post
Malt 379
Sorry to hear about you loss Mooster. Some people say a ferret is only a ferret, but you get attached to them, and feel great affection for the little stinkers if you spend any amount of time with them.
