Hedge_hunter27 18
Decided to go for a mid week mooch to a farm to check if there was any rats around, we took Nipper (plummer), Red (plummer nuttall) and Tess (lurcher). On arriving at around 9 p.m. we had a look around and saw a couple about, one escaped in the first barn by managing to get up a pipe that we couldn’t get anything into so we move around the farm and entered the byre, both terriers went belting down the byre and straight out of the hole in the bottom door towards the slurry pit  . Pointer went around to see where they had gone and I stayed in the byre with Tess, I decided to slowly walk towards the bottom door and the next thing I saw was Tess grabbing at a rat but it was slippy and she just couldn’t seem to get hold of it, then the rat ran at me , my automatic reflex was to kick it and it was a good job that Nipper had heard the commotion as he came belting back up just in time to catch it with Tess. We then moved into the second barn, had a shine around and couldn’t see anything, I felt something run over my foot so I turned and shone the lamp to find nipper nailing a big rat on it’s exit from the barn . By this time it was getting on for 9.40 p.m. so we decided to put the dogs back in the pick up and sit for 10 minutes before going back around. We sat talking quietly and just happened to look in front of the pick up to see 3 rats running around in the farm yard. We couldn’t believe it , we watched where they were coming from and going to, gave it 5 more minutes then we were back out to have a look around. Pointer was just about to shine his lamp into the first barn, when a rat must have climbed up the cow pen and it jumped straight out at him, well I have never seen him move so quick (I think the words were “f%#@+!g hellâ€) and that was it, I was in hysterics with laughter after that :11: . On further investigation around the barns/byres the place was heaving, the rats were running up the walls, in the cavities, along the roof rafters, even running along the benches in the workshop, the dogs were going mental  . Dogs and rats running everywhere so I’m not sure who got what after that and Pointer managed to shoot a couple down from the rafters for the dogs . After all the commotion and having to get home, bath the dog, get a shower and get to bed in order to get up for work, we decided to call it a night and arrived home for about 11.00 p.m. :lazy: Pics aren't the best, took with a camera phone. pointer 543
I feel old mate. especially now that ive got some blond running around after rats in the middle of the night with me.I havent the energy to go launching myself at rats. These days i like to just stand in one spot and flick a lamp about.Shes got me moving pallets and junk about or prodding rats out of places only rats would hide in I couldnt help but wonder if we shouldnt be using our energy up in some other way at that time of night Edited February 19, 2009 by pointer Quote Link to post
goldfinch2007 2,332
makes you feel alive a bit of ratting Quote Link to post
Hedge_hunter27 18
You are old Pointer, you should just leave the ratting to me, I mean you being blind and deaf doesn't really help me or the dogs As for using your energy for something else at that time of night, how about you stay in and nitt and I'll go ratting. Less energetic for you . Quote Link to post

Hedge_hunter27 18
Decided to have a quick trip ratting on Friday night, it was a last minute decision so we didn’t arrive until 10.15 p.m. We took Fudge (Plummer), Nipper (Plummer) and Red (Plummer Nuttall). Again the rats were climbing up the walls and around the roof, impossible for the dogs to get. Pointer managed to roll over a gate which I missed so couldn’t laugh but put his back out so is now constantly moaning :realmad: . The dogs managed these few . We had an hour out yesterday in the daylight with Red and Nipper, plenty of holes, the dogs were marking but nothing bolting with the smoker and really hard to dig . Nipper managed this one after vigorous digging and biting at the soil . Edited February 22, 2009 by Hedge_hunter27 Quote Link to post
Hedge_hunter27 18
Had a trip to a local farm last night, arrived at around 9.45 p.m. We let the dogs out (Nipper & Red) but there didn’t seem to be many rats around, well not that the dogs could get at, anyway there has been some pallets that me & Pointer have been wanting to shift for a while but they have always had too much heavy gear on them but not last night . A couple of bags of feed were swiftly moved then we lifted pallet by pallet off and placed them on the floor, five or six pallets later and we reached the bottom where there was a few rats. One managed to escape but the dogs weren’t letting these go , had a dig around with the gripe but nothing else appeared. By the time we had put the pallets back, tidied the straw and put the dogs back in the pick up it was getting on for 10.30 p.m. so after a swift 10 minute wait Pointer had a quick scope round with the air riffle and managed to shoot a couple. Then it was off home to get the dog bathed before a shower and bed :lazy: . Quote Link to post
