The roll came to a bit of a pause today.

My Brother-in-law came over this morning to take me out for a stalk, and,he arrived at 0615hrs.I decided to try a place that I haven't been since I shot two Roe does there(a right and a left). As we pulled off the main road and headed down the single lane track it started to become quite misty, and,I was worried that it would be too bad to see anything, anyway we pulled into the farmyard, and,we parked up,and,it seemed like the mist/fog was in sort of bands, and, were moving all of the time.We headed up towards the first field, and,as we got through the gate the bloody thing came off the hinge, and, clanked into the concrete floor. This was the cue for 4 Roe to exit stage right, three of them bounded off right down into the far end of the field, and, the other one stopped about 175yds away.I knew that I couldn't cross the field without spooking them,so,I got down on my substantial belly(not quite so substantial now might I add)and, got the scope on the nearest,it was a Buck,so,I decided to stalk along the lower hedgeline and try to get a bit nearer to the rest of them.I was hidden from them by a banking with a sparce hedge on top,so,it wasn't too hard to get up to them, and,as I neared the end of the hedgeline, and, peered slowly around the corner.........well would you believe it they were all Bucks, and, one of them that ran back to where they had originally came from was a bloody good Buck too.One of the others ran up the banking where they were, and, probably over the very busy main road, and, the other two bounded off along the valley.I was a bit frustrated that there were no Does with them, but,I was over the moon that there is going to be some good times ahead come April. We headed back to the first field as I decided to just check out the area that I had shot the two Does, and,as we rounded the corner, and,I glassed the large oak tree they were feeding under,a face nearly filled the Swaro's....there was a pricket peering back at me from maybe 35yds,it had poked it's head out of a gap in the hedge,so that was 5 Bucks in two fields, things are definitely looking good.We then decided to go down to the farmers other yard where he has another 180-200acres,but,there hasn't been too many showing there lately,so,I didn't hold out too much hope.To cut a long story short,as we got near the far side of the farm, and up to the boundary fence I spied two Does couched down without a care in the world. My B-i-L told me there was a chap watching us from above my permission,so,I decided to go up to him and introduce myself,he turned out to be the neighbouring landowner(Alpaca breeder)and,I obviously asked the question as the Does were on his land. Now,I would love to be able to tell you I now have the remainder of the valley to shoot over, but,as he put it...."It aint my bag,so,thank you but no thank you". We had a good chat though, cos, you never know he may change his mind in the future, and,it never pays to make enemies. He has fowls, and,YES he does have FOX trouble, but,he is still against shooting them, but,as we parted,I just said, well you know how to get hold of me if you need any foxes sorted out.

The funny part is that he has borrowed a Fox cage trap to trap his problem foxes, and, when he has got them,he then takes them over by the M4 and releases them.Talk about passing a problem on to someone else??? Anyway, that was my morning,no spoils of war today, but,a lot to look forward to,and,it was lovely to be out. Here are a couple of pics of the bottom farm................
