I run mine for a few miles a day behind the bike for a few weeks to tighten everything up and toughen there feet, then I enjoy watching a dog getting fit running game IMO there is no other way of getting a lurcher to its full fittness/potential. socks 32,253 Posted May 21, 2009 Report Share Posted May 21, 2009 (edited) stamina ... lamp fit ... cardio fit ... muscle tone ... lactic acid prevension ... fast twitch muscle fibres ... slow twitch muscle fibres .... recovery time .... all these areas require a different aproach in the technique used to utilise them to their maximam and to get the best out of your dog for the job it is used for means having to tailor your training regime to encorporate what you need to get the end result ..........or just run the fooker...... yep but then we would need to go into the feeding regime to gain the best out of the dog for the chosen task ...IE ... long runs ... short bursts ... a mixture of both ... fast recovery ... muscle depletion ... lactic build up ... all these scenarios can be bettered with correct feeding ... but that is a whole other thread LOL ........... i do think you know what your talking about socks...regarding feeding anyway... ..a serious question though...do you use vitamins supplements....i think i got my dogs diet spot on now....but iam all ears for more info..... Don't encourage him Snoop.... As you know,.talk is cheap,..and if you saw how FAT his famous Collie Cur actually was,...well,...I've said enough,..I'll say no more... Fit before work will reduce the risk of injuries while the dog adapts to the work, basically it's adaption with reduced risk through graduation of load. Stamina is mainly breeding but good training will enhance the natural abilities especialy as to recovery speed. The vitamins question if you feed a good balenced diet then that will give a good supply of them, it's a grey area that is slowly being investigated. There antioxident properties may well come out as counter productive in high doses these, rather like lactic acid, as part of a procees rather than a bad thing. Quote Link to post

slips 114 Posted June 11, 2009 Report Share Posted June 11, 2009 it be intresting to hear how gamedog trainers would go about gettin a runnin dog ready ie deit/vitimins/exerise but im like most good grub trotin and give to em when there ready to take it and just as inportant a warm dry draft free sleepin kennel a dog layin cold will loose wieght and muscle injury take twice as long to mend and if your lookin at your dog on a winters morning with its coat stickin up a shore sign he layin cold just over things what come in to workin dogs keeps Quote Link to post

If you can do a bit with 'em, it'll make all the difference to both when the season kicks in. Joe Ox and SJM both have it right too. The key is, to fit a dogs excercise around your daily life, keep it simple to what suits you, that way you'll be able to keep it up and thats far better for your mutt than sporadic bursts when time allows.
