Peter Skellan 0
I'm a lucky man in that I have an empty Burton 5 gun cabinet, a newly issued FAC & SGC and A £2,200 budget. I want a nice shotgun for myself something like a Silver Pigeon III second hand. A rough 12 bore for wet stormy nights and to give to visitors. A Tikka T3 .223 with scope. ( I like Varmint or Stainless just for the look). I'm drawn to a Predator8 sound moderator.. The cabinet is paid for. What I'm interested in is peoples choices of gun for the money. I'm keen on second hand and would like a Harris bipod for the rifle. I'm going to go target shooting on a range, hunt fox, shoot on posh shoots and also blast my own clays on my own land. I'm short at 5' 5" and don't need ultra long range optics or low light scopes. I'll post the eventual purchased rig for all to see. What would you buy? The World's (Guntrader) your oyster.. Peter. SportingShooter 0
You seem to have a fair idea there I would always buy the best you can afford, a Beretta or Browning would be my choice. Personally Brownings fit me better Secondhand in either gun provided it is looked after will last a long time. A rough 12 bore? If O/U something like a Lanber, Franchi, Baikal even, many S/H can be found in most places. Personally, like the Franchi. S/S then perhaps an AYA Yeoman, Sarasqueta/Arrietta. Like the AYA personally. With the rifle, try and buy new if you can, a S/H rifle has no guarantees unlike a Shotgun, in that you can't truly tell how many rounds have been put through it or how it shoots. Tikka is a fine brand, as is Remington and CZ for the money. If I were you, I'd be looking at Tikka as well. Buy the best quality Scope you can for the rifle always, the scope should cost more than the rifle Look at Leupold or similar SS Quote Link to post
Peter Skellan 0
Thanks for the advice. I was thinking a side by side for the second gun would make for something different. I believe that makes it more expensive but whats to look out for with a £400 Side by Side used 12 bore? Silver Pigeons seem like an easy choice as they're easy to sell on - I'm thinking a basic 3 is maybe best. I have a small hankering after a Cynergy Sporter but have never handled one let alone shot one. Just like the technology and can live with the looks. T3's seem cheap at the moment. Peter. SportingShooter 0
Stay away from the Cynergy Black Ice if I were you, like shooting a drain pipe when I used it A S/S will be, on the whole, cheaper than O/U's as O/U is more popular at the moment. A £400 S/S should buy you something decent, look out for pitting in the barrels, that the barrels are tight against the action face and that it fits you There are more basic Silver Pigeons than the three as you can guess, just see what you fancy in regard to action design. Peter Skellan 0
There was me thinking SS would be more expensive. Thanks for the advice. The biggest mystery is which scope to buy - I'm leaning towards a Zeiss for about £800 but would like to be more persuaded.. Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Nothing wrong with Zeiss, very clear optics. If your a fan of S/H look at a Nightforce or Swarovski high magnification scope for that money;) Quote Link to post
cyclonebri1 8
I think you need to step down or stand back. You are contemplating so many options from what you've posted that unless you are very well guided or plain lucky, not all your choices will be correct if you rush them. If I were you, and was a level headed sensible bloke, (not me), I'd buy the gun that you need at present, be it rifle/shotgun or whatever. If you get that right, then fine, if you get it wrong then change it. Only this way will you get each aspect covered. Then move onto the next. You may spend over or under. Your remaining budget will dictate later/lower priority options????????? Quote Link to post
Mr Adventure 0
Can't go wrong with a T3 in 223.....this is mine with a Bushy 6-24x50 4200. Graet rifles Quote Link to post
lxx73 0
Tikka T3 Varmint .223, bang a Zeiss conquest 4.5x15 on it (500-600 nicker from american fleabay if you shop around) this will do you for both range work and fox. Why not try a Beretta 686E which should cover both clays and rough shooting. Quote Link to post
coldweld 65
Silver pigeon ! Good choice . Wet nights rough/lend gun ? sbs not sure it is ideal. a sbs feels and shoots very differently from an ou . And you will not shoot the sbs as well as you shoot the ou . There are are some good shots with sbs [ not classing myself as one but i use sbs] but the average shot shoots better with an ou. So you might end up using the ou on the wet nights !! I would but a cheap ou plenty about for less than £ 200. Tikka t3 ! very nice gun but due to costs only comes in long action so with .223 cal it seams a bit sloppy in the action. Sako do a short action. Scope 2nd hand ! good choice Second hand S&B,Swarovski/Ziess would be my choice Nightforce are very good but are heavy. Quote Link to post
lxx73 0
.223 cal it seams a bit sloppy in the action. Never heard it described as a sloppy action before, I must disagree on this. Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
.223 cal it seams a bit sloppy in the action. Never heard it described as a sloppy action before, I must disagree on this. Each to their own and I like both my Tikkas, but they have a single size action which gives a very long pull for many calibres, never really thought of a term to describe this, but I'd accept sloppy action on my T3 Lite .223 and T3 Hunter .243!!! Just got a Remmy 700SPS in .308 and the bolt is better fitting and less sloppy than Tikka! Still not descride it as a snug fit though!!! Edited February 19, 2009 by Deker Quote Link to post
Night Hunter 109
Heres my Tikka T3 in 22-250 Quote Link to post

You would not go far wrong with any of the above but consider also Browning etc shotguns, and other model Berettas, plenty of good well priced models around. On the rifle side, certainly Tikka and Remingtom would be my first choices on a budget, born out of a few years experience of various makes! £800 on some glass as mentioned somewhere else on this thread and £795 for the cheapest Silver Pigeon on Guntrader may leave you a bit tight on a rifle and another shotgun, moderators, bipods, slings, slips and all the cleaning equipment!!! Maybe just take things a bit slower!! Quote Link to post
Peter Skellan 0
Point taken on trying to do everything at once. I'll start with the cheapy 12 bore and work from there. A few people have suggested a 686E as being a good allround gun. The T3 is pretty much a definite its more a matter of scope for it. It would be nice to find someone want to sell a completley set up rifle with scope/moderator/slip all included. I see plenty of new scopes being retailed on the internet but have yet to find much of an online marketplace for used scopes - is there one? Quote Link to post
