Matt 160
Whilst I can see that those boxes are very well made, and have been carefully thought out, I can see a couple of problems with them. Firstly, to work properly, a Fenn needs a close fitting roof, otherwise it will throw its victim clear of the trap and cause a 'foul' catch. I'm not sure if you can reduce the distance between the trap and the entrance to help with that. Secondly, I'm not convinced that the trap will work properly like that. If the squirrel enters the trap vertically, it either lands on it's arse, or it hits the fenn head first and therefore gets caught around the belly. If you watched the squirrel wars programme, there was a clip (just after the break) which clearly showed a foul caught squirrel which had to be dispatched. The cause of that is those tunnels. Fenn traps are designed to sit on the floor, with the target hitting the pan with his front feet as it passes over. I think for a tunnel like that, a bodygripper would be more suitable. No offence intended ~ this is all just my opinion. Quote Link to post
OldTrapCollector 377
These traps work very well and kill quickly. Whilst the Fenn trap does need to be contained usually to be effective - the fact that gravity is working with you to ensure that the squirrel hits the centre of the trap plate and the jump of the sprung trap ensures a good chest catch every time. I have used similar for years when required (I used to put them in the top of my pheasant feeder stations awith very good results) OTC Quote Link to post
richie 1
wouldn't it be possible to have the box placed horizontally, then the squirrel can enter from the side, then it will have to cross the trap to get the bait, also the roof of the tunnel will help prevent any foul catches ? jakepotjo 3
matt no offence taken what so ever ther will all ways be adifrence of opiains i have made one the same size to day with a side entrace for a diffrence i will make 12 diffrent types smaller ones and yes richi i will try one like that the only thing to remember is i will have to put them in the trees so the pigs dont get my catches every option is welcome good or bad this is a triel and erro thing that i am trying Quote Link to post

DUCKWING 302
PERSONALLY JAKE , I CAN SEE NO REASON WHY THEY WOULDNT CATCH WELL ............... NO ANIMAL LOWERS ITSELF ARSE FIRST INTO A BOX !! THEY DROP IN HEAD FIRST , THE HEIGHT OF THE BOX SHOULD HELP WITH THE ANIMALS MOMENTUM .. HAVING THE REVERSE AFFECT TO A TUNNEL , THOUGH I WOULD MAKE SURE THERES NOT A LARGE GAP AROUND THE INSIDE EDGE BETWEEN TRAP AND BOX ....... YOU COULD PERHAPS TRY A BODYGRIP SET HALF WAY UP THE BOX ON NAILS WITH A FINE WIRE BETWEEN THE TRIGGER , THEN AS THE SQUIRREL DROPS INTO THE BOX ....... BINGO ! ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post
