socks 32,253
i started hunting with the humble rabbit and rat but i have shot dogged and dug probably all the animals there is to on this island and when i get old and creaky and can just about a walk out in the fields with the dog i will no doubt end my hunting life on the rabbit and rat ...... so why is it that people think that the bigger animal you shoot hunt with a dog or dig to makes you a better hunter ??? the times i have heard so called hunting men put down lads that only go ferreting or lamp only rabbits is amazing ...... phrases like ... that dog is only any good for the bunnies he would never take a fox ... to soft f*****g rubbish he knows f**k all about hunting he only catches rabbits ........... he has never dug the garden let alone a f*****g fox ....... so just because a man chooses to only go ferreting or ratting does this make him any less a hunter ????????? ......... Tommy 9
Have heard the same thing myself Socks !! Usually at shows !! A good friend of mine was always into his coursing and once at a show he met some lads selling a dog that had 'spewed' on fox as a GREAT rabbit dog. When asked about the dog it was found out the dog had never been ferretting, never been rabbit lamping but had caught a few dropped rabbits. These idiots seemed to that Rabbits were the lowest of the low and that any lurcher could catch rabbits !! I've been out and seen some decent coursing dogs made to look real fools behind a 'EASY' !!! Rabbit. These lads think as you say that Deer and Fox are the be all and end all of lurcher work but it usually turns out that some of these idiots are usually out half a dozen times a season at the most. All the best Tommy
roache 0
Good post, it's every man to his own for me. I would like to see some of the hero fly by night hunters do the human equivilant of what they ask of their dogs.
Kye 77
Its funny you should mention that Socks,.. When i first came over here, all i wanted to do was take Coyotes with Lurchers...i was mad for it (well i still am!..lol.) BUT i have had SOOO much fun catching rabbits and hares with my dogs, i would never give up the humble "small" game.. Yeah, i like hunting toothed game...but i would never miss a good days ratting, or a days ferreting...infact, when people ask me "What do you miss the most?" i always say ratting and rabbiting!.. I honestly think its a phase people go through...they cut there teeth on rats, rabbist and the like...then they get into digging, or deer with Lurchers...then anyone who hunts the smaller stuff is a messer or fool!?.. After a while, they come to there senses...and although they still like doing big quarry, they still have time/respect for the small game... Although im still only a spring chicken (25) i love my rabbits and hares...yeah, im gonna hunt feral pig in the future, maybe even a bear or Lion...but i will still be a small game hunter. No greater time can be had, than with a few good mates, and a few dogs (of any type) and a old chicken/pig farm infested with rats...even the most dour faced, grumpy f****r can be brought to girlish giggles when a rat runs over there mates shoulder etc... Ohhhh, them where the days!... Kye,..

Guest Geordie
Good thread and it should be interesting to hear some of the replies Personally im a man with dogs, not a dogman.know very little about dogs, hunting,or even quarry identification (as some of you lads will already know  ) Im 42 and just got into the lurcher dogs a couple of years back, why? Dunno really,i didnt hang round with 'real deals' i suppose. Met some great real deal people and met some right nob ends, tho thats just my personal opinion of them. Each to their own i say,if you like me you like me ,if ye dont fair enough i dont give a monkeys arse All ive ever done is lamp and ferret rabbits, and a little bit ratting, its good fun oh and i once caught a hare, apparently You couldnt pay me to dig holes down to terriers tho, imnot against it,im just a lazy twat, ive seen th size of some of the holes them lads dig fair play to them terrier lads, they do some hard graft. But i'll go anywhere and do anything as long as its good craic and the lads know what theyre doing. Ye can have the biggest gob in the world,i'll sit and listen to you til the cows come home,as long as ye dont spout rubbish
Guest sushie
Each to there own! Everyone does things differently! As long a you can justify your actions to yourself then you shouldnt worry what others say or think about you! Just my own opinion.

Guest MOLLY
You never get this problem when you are a woman Socks....ill tell you my opinion why. I think some men get into working dogs because they are not man enough, by this i mean, they transfer their inadequencies down the lead to the dog and the dog has to be the biggest, hardest, nastiest, killing machine ever known. These will be the men who brag about the hours the dog spent underground, how it ripped the fox to shreds and came out with half its own face hanging off. Their big bull x lurcher (they would never dream of owning a little shivery grey x whippet!) has taken 6 fox in one night, and are probably the people who become the keyboard warriors we are unfortunately stuck with on various forums. But would never stand up to someone causing a problem in their own street! When your a woman your not supposed to be 'hard' so you get a slap on the back because you only take bunnies and rats in the hunting world. People outside the hunting world think women are hard and callous cos they kill things, and dare tell them you go lamping alone in the middle of the night then you are positively weird MOLL. pegandgun 52
Agree with everything said so far .Varioty is the spice of life the old saying goes,i love all field sports and partake in alot of them .But theres one ime not keen on and it involves shovels and terriers. Not that ime against it in any way, just cant be doing with digging f*****g great holes . I bet theres been more fun hunting rabbits and rats over the years than all the other species put together The humble rabbit and rat look after me through winter and summer so i suppose i owe them both a great deal
ratkilla 35
i havent dun much big game hunting at all a bit though, but i still love a bit of ratting or rat shooting and ferreting and running them with dogs. but i'd prefer to go out for a nights rat shooting instead of a nights fox lamping with the gun dogs make me tick alot more

Hardfeather 56
Excellent post Socks,i've done all quarry although not done the digging on a big scale since I left hunt service, and now as you know I only do rat and rabbit,I've got Tally and a couple of small lurchers and they do me fine.At the end of the day when i've been out I can say I've had a good day and be proud of what I've done.So in answer to your question I don't think it does make any of us a lesser hunter for taking smaller quarry, every dog suits its purpose.I would also say that most of the people who boast about what they've done probably aint done it anyway I think on some sites you can see straight through some peoples posts even though you've never met them and they probably haven't done anything at all.I can only see it as good when someone lika yourself who has done everything still has that respect for the rabbit and rat and those that work them yis Chris
