Last nights foray

Recommended Posts

Went to have a look on the chicken farm i do the foxing on. Pulled up at the farmhouse and spoke to man in charge. There is a caravan near the organic sheds and the chap there had just seen a fox run past his house with a chicken still squawking in its jaws so he was glad i had arrived .I had the .222 tonight as its been good to me recently .We set off on a wide circuit of the whole place which we dont always do as its fairly big .Down by the wood we saw a pair of eyes but only briefly ,there is a very shy fox here ,has been for ages and that was probably him .

Over the brow of the next field my mate saw a flash of eyes in the edge of the permission and a good 300 yards away id say .I squeaked and the response was instant .Keeping the beam low we got it in to 70yds and i shot it ,a big vixen and barren by the feel and look of her .A good start but walking up the hill along the boundary edge ,the bipod decided to fall off the rifle dumping the barrel on the ground .An inspection came up wth no real reason for it to of happened so i took the thing off all together .Onwards.Walked up to the sheds and saw another pair of eyes but it ran at the sound of the squeak ,not away but in a semi-circle around us ,stopping about 100 yds away where it thought it was safe i suppose .Wrong .Got down on the lamp bag and was surprised how steady that was .Shot this one through the chest to reveal a mangey dog fox .The mange is back then or this was a transient fox ?.Took the two back to the caravan where we had had an audience it seemed as they had seen the shot .The owner was there and he pointed out that they now own another bit of ground tacked onto theirs and we should have a look .The second field held a fox that was niether lampshy nor impressed by the squeak and just sat there at maybe 170-180 yds out .I knew that a move towards it would result in a runner so i lead down as before using the lamp bag .At the report ,charlie ran a little way then keeled over having been hit fair and square in the engine room.Three foxes on here hasnt been done for quite a while so we were feeling rather pleased with ourselves ,except for the bipod incident. :(

glad to hear your sorting out farmers problems youll have that permission for a while.....its good when they see your helping out

how long you been after that lamp shy bugger?

my brotherand i had one like that just didnt like the lamp or the squeak just use dto vanish....

brother got him eventually with a fair bit o success in early mornings at dawn..... apparently a good tactic for the old lamp shy buggers is to get em first light.

just gotta be able to haul my lazy ass out o cozy warm bed first......once im out i love it ....jist getting out o bed the hard part ;)
