I find the busiest looking buries hardly ever hold rabbits on my permissions, it's the overgrown looking feckers that are hard to find that seem to hold. Before we had dogs that could mark, we'd set up if it looked good to us. Now the dogs never seem to mark them, and we've given up trying to second guess the dogs, because they know more than us! Is there still thick cover on your ground P Hunter? If so, I'd bet that that's where the coneys are, same as on ours! Quote Link to post

Guest tewkesferreter
p.hunter, are you only using one ferret on the big burrys. if so you might find there just giving the ferret the runaround. Quote Link to post
col g 0
i would still be questioning the ferrets ability.reading some of the lads earlier posts the ferret hasnt seen much in the way of rabbits and is probablys still in experienced.i also think he needs a dog with a good nose, this will let him know for sure if theres anything home, and wether the ferret is doing what it supposed to be doing.ive had situations like this myself.fortunatley enough for me ive got a good dog that lets me know if theres anything home.i normally take three ferrets out with me.if two of them are not doing the job and bolting rabbits out of marked setts, ive always got the old hob that will either push them out,or stay with the rabbit/s til theyre dug to Quote Link to post
John-B 4
A dog is essential mate, and on bigger sets like that pile the ferrets down otherwise they will be getting the runaround. Quote Link to post
Guest Magwitch
Can only catch whats there mate.......................... Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
Better luck next time, those marks look more like deer stripping the bark on that tree, bit high up for rabbits, bite marks are a bit big too. Quote Link to post
pencoed hunter 7
Defenitly nothing there. The farm that we were on said he don't think there is anything there anyway but we gave it ago. Nothing bolted went down every hole he was coming out of the holes with mud on him. On the 20 holer there wasn't much shit around. Ye hoping to get a lurcher in the summer for ferreting and maybe lamping now and agen and going to get another ferret jill in the summer to. Off agen on the weekend to another farm if my fried can get permission for it. Ill let you know how it goes. Quote Link to post

Guest tewkesferreter
they dont allways thump around though mate especially with only one ferret after them, theyre not gonna feel too pressured into bolting either. get yourself a couple more for next season and youll be surprised how much better youre cath rate is.
