Tuning or Detuning a Rapid 7?

Hi all,

How hard is it to tune or detune a Mk1 Rapid 7, and whats the costs associated with it? Or is it a "How long's a piece of string" type question? Asking on behalf of a friend who has one, and it looking to get it chronod. Also, what's the procedure on a gunsmith chrono'ing it and finding it over the limit? If it's under I'm assuming that the gunsmith will turn the power up a bit if asked, but just curious as to what would happen if the gunsmith finds it over the limit? Or is it dependant on the gunsmith?

Cheers.

Costs vary but it's usually associated as one of the easier rifles to work on. Be warned though. A savvy firearms officer will look straight for the tell tale signs of modification, and act according.

Get it chronoed to see what it's doing.

Get it detuned, if necessary, get an FAC if not. The former is easier than the latter.

Most gun smiths will do the work. It's straight forward enough but costs vary. As for the legality of doing such a thing it's unlikely that a gunsmith would grass you up. They'll just make it legal for you. Best to ask for a quote to get it sorted.

For anyone considering replying to this thread with actual instructions to adjust the power of the rifle... Don't.

Thanks for your reply. I don't know the history behind his gun, so it may be tuned, may not. I know he's concerned if it is over the limit though. I'll pass on the details to him. Another question is, if it is over, is it likely to have been done properly or home tuned? Not asking for details on how to tune it, just if it's easy enough for Joe Bloggs to have done it?

Thanks again.

Thanks again.

First step is to get it chronographed.

With the simplicity of these rifles it's likely that anyone that has owned it has had a crack at tuning it. It's very straight forward and Joe Blogg's pet cat could have had a go while Joe was out at work.

Ok,

If the rifle were to have been upped proffesionally, then you can be 100% sure that it would have only been done if the owner at the time could have produced his FAC cert as evidence of being permitted to own and FAC power air rifle BEFORE any work were to have been undertaken and done.

Now, having said that bit, once the FAC cert has been produced, and the work undertaken and carried out by the gunsmith, the rifle would then have been duly registered by the gunsmith as having had the work done on it, and would then have become (in the eyes of the law) a firearm. The ruling is, that once something becomes a firearm, it will remain a firearm for the rest of it's life - end of, i'm afraid.

Therefore, if this is the case with this rifle, then no, one cannot 'un-FAC' an air rifle at all - either by tuning it down or whatever means one would use.

To try and alter any weapon registered as a firearm, in any way whatsoever, constitutes a criminal offence - the result of which? 5 years of 3 squares a day in one of HM's many guesthouses!

I hope that helps clear it up a bit mate?

Regards,

Grim.
