she is really stubbern, getting there now tho her recall is getting much better, she sits when told and has started retriveing 8 out of 10, just keeping at it, karl

I can't fault him when we are out walking, he never wanders far anyway but always comes when called, even if playing with other dogs, HOWEVER he sometimes decides to just sit down and look at me like i am crazy when i call him in from the garden VERY annoying!! i can tell him to sit and he either does it beautifully or he just completly ignores me, as for doing anything on command for anyone else...............forget it!! not a chance in hell, they do need a firm owner, i live in a 'up its own arse area' so am waiting for someone to have a go at me when i am being firm with him, all good fun

Ah well i haven't walked him with another puppy.................that might change things a bit, how alert is she? i have been showing him bunnies in the field and he doesn't seem interested, watches them run off but isn't excited by this at all, i'm not sure if it is his young age or he is just going to be shite!!!

mines well alert, i had to call her back across the fields near me because she went on a run to see a jogger that me and my mate cudnt see lol, if she sees anything move she wants to chace it no matter what it is, which aint really that much fun when there are horses all over round here, karl

Reading what you've both put about training yours. . . . . .It's like i'm reading about Spy!!

 

He has been the easiest dog i've ever had in terms of he house trained in a day, so quiet and calm you don't know you have him. However is training has well just been hard work really, Like you say Hollie it's the in consistencey that drives me mad!! Spider is coming up 11 months now and i must say the difference in him within the last 6 weeks has been profound. It's like everything we've worked on has just clicked, mind you most dogs at 6 months get a bit arrogant and push the boundaries.

 

The problem i have with Spider is he is so sensitive, not really nervous just very very sensitive to voice. Shouting does nothing except upset him and make him sulk! This does has it's benefits though as i can get him to listen by slightly raising my voice.

 

As for bunnies, spider didn't give a dam about them till about 7 months, we live in farm land and he's seen them every day along with deer and other game. . . The other dogs would take off and he would just knob around completely un aware! He also seemed un responsive, but then i'm used to collies which are insanely responsive!

 

I use a flirt stick with a fox brush on the end, as a form of exercise for all my dogs and it was this that got spider interested in small furry things and i think helped increase his prey/chase drive. I also took him out ferreting with experienced lurchers and just let him watch, this had a massive impact on him.

 

Now at 11 months he's been ferreting a few times and has taken about 4 bunnies un aided whilst out walking. He is now very much a hunter and will work cover naturally whilst the terrier pushes game out. I'm over the moon with how he's coming on and cant fault him really. I do have to work slightly harder with his recall since he's discovered game but this i think is only normal. Today he took off after a muncjac and came back when called which really impressed me.

 

All in all i'm very happy with his progress and hope he continues to mature into a biddable, smart little worker.

Heres a pic of my 17 month old beddy x whippet/grey, she used to be like my shadow on walks at six month old, that was untill she got rabbit fever.

Just getting her back right on the recall now.
