snoopdog 1,256
do i agree with hare shoots ..no...i think the hare deserves better then that....would i critise a man who goes on hare shoots... no.....its up to him what sport he chooses...or his method of control....to many agruments between hunters ...coursers or shooters ..dosent do us any favours .......to all you people that dont like hare shoots.would you protest agaisnt them ,,,,because i certainly wouldnt..its there choice .....i do think that if they got a good dog behind a hare and watched the course they would never shoot one again,.....i will just say this argueing about what method we hunt hares over the net is only providing the antis with more fuel for the fire..... ... but i will say this ....get yourself a dog......you will be alot more statisfied with the outcome,.,,, Quote Link to post
undisputed 1,664
Dont shooters have enough to shoot at without adding the hare to their list? This isn't a rant about shooting as I do a bit myself, but I cant bring myself to shoot a hare now. I remember a documentary many years ago about hares in Ireland. There were hundreds of them living on an airport and they just long netted them and released them elsewhere. Would this be a viable option? theres plenty places up here that could do with them being re-introduced. Quote Link to post
barnslyben 74
Well its that time of year again, the shooting season is finished and most shoots are letting their ferreteters into the coverts to ferret the rabbits. And now the hare shoots are starting,my brother spends a lot of time beating and picking up thruoghout the shooting season and has now got invites to 4 hare shoots in suffolk the first today the expected bag is about 300 hares this will be followed by a second shoot next week where they expect a further 200 hares after that they are left alone, similar numbers are expected on the other shoots,it always seems a shame to shoot that many hares but i suppose they need controlling.Since the ban several people have been prosecuted in this area for illegal hare coursing and with coursers recieving driving bans and vehicles conviscated its no wonder most courers are wary of slipping dogs in this area. WHATS YOUR VIEW?? i must confess i used to shoot hares years ago,saw too many wounded not by me but shit shots with shotguns, anyone can get a gun and without any training go into the field an shoot and wound these amazing creatures,i stopped shooting them 15 yrs ago, love to see them run by a good dog no finer feeling in the world for me,a dog will take out the weak and the old thus leaving the fittest to breed to the fittest thus inproving the breed if it catch s its dead if not its alive not wounded ,a shotgun is indiscriminate Quote Link to post

I do not own a lurcher of any type but a few of my friends do and i love watching the chase. Just gets my back up when people diss someones sport/hobby just because it is not for them. AKA-BRINDLE 879
Its a digusting waste IMO. Most folk would be happy to retreive 2 or 300 hares in one season with a dog and gun, never mind blasting that amount in one day. Guns make no distinction as to whether or not the hare is fit or strong, so shooting them does not encourage survival of the fittest, whereas coursing on the other hand, does exactly that. Or should I say did spot on! Quote Link to post

Doglost Co-Ordinator 4
Perhaps I'm missing the point but why ban hunting with dogs & then let them shoot them by the barrow load??? Dont they ever miss & just end up injuring?? I've nothing against hunting or shooting - just seems wrong when then ban one sport & encourage another. Quote Link to post
border lad 1,047
its bollox mate, shooting hares should be banned not coursing I agree 100% shooting hares should be banned, Instead of shooting them, Long net them, and transport them up to the south west scottish borders, they are are very thin on the ground, up here, were once there was an abundance, of them, January and feb, I have only seen a couple of them, were as normal you could see 5 or 6 in one field,(((( running and boxing,)) the introduction, of the Buzzards, chemical spraying to kill the tattie shaws, and shooters, have all taken there Toll, and let the coursing come back to life, and let the countryman Be, to enjoy his life again, Quote Link to post

Back Stabbath 1
Well, theres no hares where I live thanks to the stupidity of taking them all. 200-300 hares in a day?? Greed. Thats all it is. An absolute waste. And as for the pest control argument, HA! Don't make me laugh! I hunt rabbits and pigeons but no way do I cover my ass by saying I'm doing "pest control". I don't even call it sport. They do it because they like it and thats it. You don't see these guys going out to the fields and picking all the ragwort because they're so interested in "pest control"! You take what you need and thats it. I've no problem with anyone else taking a hare or two to eat, but no way should they take everybody elses hares until the population suffers. Its just typical white men mentality. Yes its their sport, and some people say we should leave them to their sport and why should we have an opinion? But no, when it affects me, its my buisness. Taking more than you need is a mortal sin in my opinion. Edited February 14, 2009 by Back Stabbath Quote Link to post

Back Stabbath 1
Well no point re-introducing them if they're just all going to be shot again. Yeah I remember being at Dublin airport years ago, saw some hares. It was lovely. Quote Link to post
