northwestmitch 9
Is there someone who can give me some advice got a young Whippet coursing/rasing working bloodlines, 5 months old, I wont to work him, hes good on recall and not to bad at retrieving, Have not had much luck at the moment getting any permission, what I can gather to many farmers messed about by gangs in my area Merseyside:thumbdown: It has been suggested to me that I might have more luck if I was to ask for permission to work Ferrets first ? whats your opinion and any thoughts ? Also I dont know much about Ferrets,, Can anyone recommend a good book, that will cover all aspects of Ferret keeping, as with any animal I like to know what Im doing, keeping in mind the welfare of the Ferret also any usefal dvds that would help me out working my ferrets , eg setting out the nets also digging out .ect. Hope am not being to forward, ANY OFFERS, :notworthy:or just some good advice to help me on my way..Cheers Quote Link to post
Guest tewkesferreter
have a look back through the older topics in the ferreting section mate, theres all you need to know there. youve got more chance of getting permission if you ask for ferreting/ratting first before asking straight off to run your dogs on there land, build up a bit of trust first. ferretgirl 0
Alpha feeds have done a little brochure that looks good for newbie ferret owners, click here to download or if you contact alpha feeds they will send you a nice printed one.......for free (always good!)! If you have any specific ferret questions, just ask away! I know a bit about ferrets (I have 5 jills).........but no good on the working side, just trying to get into it myself! Quote Link to post
chalkedup 14
im still trying to get permission for ferreting myself but most places either have people doing it already or been messed about in the past so im going to get a air gun and smoker to open up my options a bit to get my foot in the door through the summer ive found all the info ive needed on here, start at page 1 and work your way to the last page reading what ever interests you i think its much better to get different views rather than a one sided book atleast then you can make your own mind up on whats best and by the time theres ferrets about for sale/free you should know what you need to know youl have enough time to build a decent size hutch, ferret box,buy nets, locator, shovel and anything else you feel you need too as the seasons pretty much over now Quote Link to post
summat decent 0
I would spend mega training your whippet ie stock breaking, staying basic commands,if you can show a farmer how steady your dog is with stock you really shouldnt have bother getting permission. Also if your pup is steady to stock it will make it easier to break to ferret, problem is alot of dogs are not stock steady, mine get regular lessons during summer.Train, train train if you dont the dog will be useless.
