Personally I dont like the idea but thats me. Iv kept rats for years (as pets) and even they can put up a good fight against anything. My dumbass mate once tryed to feed one to his snake and it gave the snake a good beating and ran off never to be seen again. He got a right whack from us all for that.

I must say I do like the look of the wee ratting style ferrets the guy I bought my jills off of had a really wee jill like that.

i think its different if the rats in the open, its got room to manouvere, thats why dogs take a few bites, but cornered in a burrow theyll generally take flight, given the chance. but if a rat comes face to face with a rat, theres only gonna be one winner, thats my opinion anyway.

i think evrybodys went a bit of subject lol ..has anybody had first hand experiance of a rat killing a ferret?..is it not the doe rat that only stands and fights but only when her young cant run yet ...

I use ferrets for ratting a lot......... ive never had one seriously hurt, the ones ive got now will kill any rat in a hole or above ground but like i say they are a little too big for the job.

The old strain I had that i gave away when I moved into the highlands were purpose bred for ratting, they were ratting most days on the local farms, and were never once pushed out by rats!

Anyway.........back to the topic please!! Anyone keep a good ratting strain, even if its just the jills that are usefull?? Cheers all

Oh, John Ostranica, that looks very small, do you use it for ratting?

Thanks again

a few years ago an old fella i worked for ; his house /shop was over run with rats he put a couple of his ferrets under the shop floor they were both killed within 20mins these rats had plenty escape routes so couldnt see them been cornered another time he shot one with an air rifle it staggered under a shed half its head was lying on the grass some weeks later we seen a rat with half its head scabbed over

Are you sure it was rats!? lol maybe a fox! i doubt rats killed both ferrets. and as for a half headed rat walking about?

might have been a tiger under their aswell dont know as iwasnt for crawling about their as for the shot rat dont see how hard that is to believe theres a boy in america had most of his brain removed after a shooting last i heard he was learning to walk /talk again seems to be improving all the time some other incidents with rats at that place couldnt put up here this was a shop selling food i gave him a mynah bird its cage was kept on the counter

I once saw a rat in my henhouse. Since all the hens were out feeding, I shut all the popholes and put my jill ferret in to kill the rat. I watched through the window.

It took a while for the ferret to find the rat but when she scented it she chased it around the henhouse trying to get hold of it. She managed to nip it a couple of times but then the rat got fed up and turned to face the ferret. After a fight the tables were reversed and the rat started to chase the ferret around the henhouse. Eventually I opened the door and crowned the rat with a stick. It was definitely more than a match for the ferret.

Personally after witnessing that I wouldn't put anything other than big hobs onto rats.

right this is my opinion based on ratting with ferrets for 5 years i have killed alot with the ferrets and they do a good job of killing them now and a again a rat will stick it out but more often then not they run as fast as they can . . . and people that say you shouldnt use your ferrets on rat need to remember that if it wernt for ratting folk rhen then its probable that the ferret wouldnt be as common as it is now. also one of my ferrets got worst kickings from a rabbit then she ever did from a rat :( in her 3 year career. its like saying dont use your dog on fox but let it tackle deer :wallbash:
