dogs-n-natives 1,182
My jills do a bit of ratting, but they are a little large for the job in my opinion... last week I had a jill wedged tight, and thought to myself that I should perhaps aquire some smaller stuff for next year. I would like to hear from anyone who keeps what they consider a small type, for rats, pics would be nice... Cheers DnN Quote Link to post

Cheers DnN Its a risky buisiness ratting with ferrets mate. A rat could easily kill or injure a ferret, and the smaller you go, the more likely the rat is to just fight than bolt. And the smaller it is, the less abuse it can take. If i were you I'd invest in a smoker as they apparently work well for rats. Quote Link to post

Guest tewkesferreter
feedings got nothing to do with it,its all down to instinct underground. ive got a small gill thats been bitten a couple of times n its never stopped her from going it again. Quote Link to post
Guest tewkesferreter
imo ferrets take more of a kicking from rabbits than they ever will off a rat. Quote Link to post
chalkedup 14
like i said its not something id personally do but each to their own but i think ferrets just love killing things its how they live in the wild ,rats have got sharp front teeth good for gnawing but as far as i know there prey is pretty small in the wild, do they even eat mice? voles? i think ferrets are better for killing and will kill most things given the chance but if ganged up on by a few rats they would get messed up pretty bad so thats why i wouldnt personally risk it Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
Never ever have I seen rats gang up on a ferret. If cornered they will do what they must to escape, but as soon as there is a route out they will go. Even with young ones there. Rats run away, they were born to run away and live for another day. Members of the ferret family on the other hand were born to kill things, if they could not perform the task that nature intended them to do, then they would go hungry and possibly not make it. Thing is we carry on and breed off the one's that don't perform. Quote Link to post
Guest tewkesferreter
i didnt think rats had any prey, there scavengers arent they? Quote Link to post

chalkedup 14
i was just told that about the rats ganging up on them by old boy, he just said if they were cornered they do it but i havnt got first hand experience of it i know rats used to get in my mums old boyfriends pigeon loft and kill the odd pigeon , all theyd eat was the breast,or might of been the heart and liver i cant remember Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
Cornered a rat will show a ferret a few tricks Chalky, but they know running is the key and will do anything for a getaway. Maybee if the old boy watched a couple push a ferret back and run I can see how he thought they might gang up. Quote Link to post
