Guest reload
The breed you are more than likely talking about are Italian and called Lagotto Romagnolo ,but many other breeds are used, Spinone are pretty popular also and various crosses of similar type breeds. I have met several people who have truffle dogs in Europe and they also do trials with them also mainly in Italy. You only get Black truffles in this country and you have got to know where to find them, plus you have to know how to train the dog Good luck, you sound like your not really serious, but if you are serious I maybe able to point you in the right direction but it will be overseas.... http://www.lagotto.net/tartufo2.htm http://www.lagotto.net/addestramento2.htm Edited February 12, 2009 by reload

Sonny Brindle 2
Went truffle hunting in Croatia a couple of years ago with the old boy in the pictures. Not sure what the dogs' breeding is, but they had incredible noses. One was quite terrier like and the other more like a tiny spaniel. The best truffle dogs change hands for thousands of pounds, and they get stolen frequently. The dogs in these pics earn their owner about £20k between October and December, the main truffle season. We went out for a couple of hours. It was good fun, and we had an incredible meal afterwards with some of the truffles we found.

WhiteLove the renault 4 too, great dog motor they are go over all sorts of ground Yes mate, white truffles. Absolutely delicious. The boys I know out there used to make a tidy living smuggling them across to Italy during the communist era. If I remember rightly the black truffle season in Istria is in summer, with the white truffles found in late autumn and early winter.

Back Stabbath 1
Springers or collies can be used, any dog with a good nose and instinct, if you can train it. Saw an Italian fella on telly, he used what looked like springers or crosses, he ate the truffles like they were just mushrooms, didn't sell them or anything.
lurchergrrl 1,441
Once upon a time, Poodles were truffle hunters. Don't know if too many of them are still used for it tho. The only truffles I've had are the chocolate variety and I can sniff them out all by myself
Guest vin
they use black pigs to hunt for them also. i think a little cocker or brittany might be just the job. vin
Paid 935
They are now farming them, so the market price will drop in a few years. Its a real long term farming practise, takes about 7 to 10 years for a crop, but after that they keep going, and improving. Prob with using pigs is, you need to be in there fast, or the pig eats them
wilko 1
i belive pigs are the best hunters of the truffle .
Malt 379
Prob with using pigs is, you need to be in there fast, or the pig eats them That's spot on Paid, I watched a program a few months back. Apparently it's quite common for truffle pig handlers to be minus a few fingers!
