oh ok the reson i belived in the terrior blood idea is because the slightly more stocky dogs seem to do quite well in the racing or is just because they are better built for sprinting, but i realise this is not alwase the case. and i was told by somone who has been racing a long time that alot of the non ped racing dogs have terrior blood in them to give them that go.

sorry im not trying to cause an argument iv been asking to many questions lol all the best rory

Hi Blando, I cannot see any point in a Patterdale/Whippet cross, what will it do that a Bedlington/Whippet cross would not do better ? I'm not a great fan of Bed/Whippets anyway, to small for rabbitting,(o.k., many people are going to disagree with me !), and as for bushing, you may aswell have a terrier or spaniel. As far as non- ped racing type whippets are concerned, they may, and most likley did, have terrier in them long ago, but the addittion of greyhound blood from the 60's up till now is the reason why the non-peds are far faster than the peds. By the way, I am a great fan of working Bedlingtons and Bed/Greyhound crosses. My pup is out of a Bed/Grey and a Deer/Grey x Whippet/Grey. Best of luck with whatever you decide on.

Cheers.

ok i mite just stick with the non ped whippets for coursing not ideal i know but as ive just started a bit of racing aswell it saves me having more dogs and they seem fine for ferreting. i dissagree with your small dogs are not up to the job comment, i havent seen many lurchers but the smaller ones turn so much better and alwase seem to finish a course quicker than a larger dog, and enless you are taking hundreds of rabbits a nite which im not i dont see the point in me having a large dog.

thanks all the best

Just to make myself clear; the Beddy/Whippet 1st crosses I have seen range from around 16" to 19", these seem, to me, to small for daytime rabbits or serious lamping. The dogs I prefer are not huge, more like 22" to around 25", I have never seen the smaller type finish a course consistently quicker than the type I prefer. Of course, this is just my opinion, and we should all have the type of dog we are happy with. The "racing "type whippet is a good all rounder in the right hands.

Cheers.

Hi Blando, you started this thread asking what sort of cross you should have, now you say you will stick with what you allready have; what is that ?

Cheers.

non ped racing whippet as i have just started racing shes 12 months seems to be doing ok with the racing but not picking up very well at the moment on rabbits, but i am told this will improve with time. but my main worry was ruining her for racing. no one with non ped racing whippets seem to use there dogs for rabbits aswell as the racing. i was told it was because they have so much go thay will try to hard and ruin themselves but i really dont know now lol

thanks all the best

Hi Blando, I was heavily into racing whippets way back in the 60's and 70's, I handicapped for some of the best tracks in the North East. We thought nothing of coursing, lamping, ferretting with our dogs

during the week and racing at the weekend. They were the bigger type of whippet, around 38/40 lb, 20/22 inch, and it seemed to do them no harm at all to be all rounders, suppose they would be classed as lurchers now !

Cheers.

Hi Blando, I'm sure that every dog owner on this site will tell you it;s a never ending learning curve, the best lurcher men will still need to ask or find out the hard way, best of luck.
