Where to keep your certificate

It's more than a little worrying when the police chopper lands in the field next to you too

 

 

I was out a few years ago, early Sunday morning. Saw a chopper around as I walked down past the farm. 10 mins later after I was tucked up in the edge of the wood the chopper circles me and lands 50yds out in the field. I quickly unloaded and put the gun down, and when the spotter came over got the full story.

 

I kid on his pushbike had been hit and killed on a road a mile or so off. The driver had done a runner and had not been found, they thought he may be hiding up in the local woods, hence the search. I was carrying the certs and because without them I'm sure I would have been lifted, I always carry the original in a jacket pocket. Not concerned how tatty it gets.

 

PS, Bloke turned himself in later that day.

I ALWAYS carry my FAC with me when i'm shooting. I keep both the firearm and shotgun certificates in a leather wallet. Even if my license is away for variation, I photocopy the front page and keep that in the wallet.

My ticket is off for variation at the mo so I am reliant on the database if stopped Normally take a copy but FEO grabbed it off me when he came round, so no opportunity, especially since the appointment was made with about 10 minutes' notice, and when I had a cold too.

 

 

You could well be right...was it fraud..???, I'm too comfortable to get up and look...!!

 

I looked on mine as it was in my back pocket,and,it hasn't got fraud or forgery on it,and,it is a very new one,just got it back from variation on the15/01/09.Where is it supposed to say either of these words?

I never carry mine keep them in the house ,as said before quick radio check and they know your fine they get told all that information if/when they radio in your car reg number

 

Only one night i got a stroppy cop and he was asking for my certs i replied just give me a receipt for the gun and ammo and i will pick them up tomorrow with the certs only to be told to sod off

 

The next time we were sitting glassing a hill when the police pull up behind us asking what we were up to my mate replied shooting and pulled his cert out opens it all up and says you want to check this against the numbers on the rifles ,The reply no chance were off for our dinner

 

It they made the certs smaller i would carry them in my wallet

I think thats a perfect reason for carrying it then?, the last thing I would want is a copper marching off with my gun and kit, really going to look after it don't you think?

 

You don't go fishing without a licence or permit when you've bought them, or you get kicked off.

On the contrary if the photocopying of the original shows *FRAUD* then thats not legal way either, in strict sense? Or is it? I interpret this as, the new certificates are meant to be carried in original only, for sure when the concerned officer sees the photocopied certificate with 'fraud' printed on it, how would he/she would react?

 

anyways for me I dont need to carry for the time being, no gun and just shooting clays at the club. If the drivers license can be bar coded then firearms licenses can be more convenient in smart card style! And drivers license is more cheaper than the firearms license.

I don't think you will get too much grief from Plod with a photocopy, especially if it's a black & white one. It's there to stop you buying guns/ammo with a good colour copy.

You misunderstand. I say carry the original, where lies the problem with that?

 

Also, what happens when you get picked for a minor traffic offence on the way back from the clay ground? Sorry if it seems pedantic but the majority of police are programmed to think gun = bad. The cert is your defence. Without it you are still in the right, but who wants kind of shite.?

hi,i always carry the original in case i need to buy more ammo,gun dealers wont take photo copies so its just as easy to carry the real thing as you would for a fishing license
