malky888 0
Had to take my terrier to the vets to get a broken leg plastered, going to cost me an arm and a leg. Now my lurcher got into a scrap and has an inch and a quarter tear in his side. Thought about vet but then thought, no way, what they charge. Patched him up with some liquid skin and a dressing to keep clean. Hoping there's no infection. Anybody done the same lately, a few running repairs ? Know of any useful products? Got any tips? Can a dog be stitched without knocking him out? Considered pet insurance but they're also taking the pee with the excess applied. Anybody had any recent claims ? Can you recommend an insurer with a reasonable excess ?

Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Any skin work needs to be thought out before you attempt it .Shave the area around the cut ,use wide sticky tape to remove loose hair .DO NOT WASH DOWN WITH WATER UNLESS ITS VERY DIRTY INSIDE .A drain needs to be sewn in at the lowest point ,a short piece of tubing that will allow fluid to drain and not accumulate .Bathe daily with salt water or [name escapes me right now ]that pink liquid from the vet .As the area scabs up reduce the bathing .Remove the stitches ,staples after 2 weeks approx but still keep clean .Exercise daily to avoid stiffening . Garypco 2
you dont have to shave or put drains in but some tears need a space or two to be able to drain and heal...heres a nasty rip my lurcher bitch had took 12 staples if i remember it was also a corner rip but the top tear was stapled leavind about an 1nch loose between her eyes for the drain to seep naturally she was brought indoors to heal and injected with mastitis tube everyday to force any shit through.... digdigger 1
You can buy the skin staplers out of the back of the countrymans weekly i got 1 after the last vets bill!! fortunately not had to use it yet however the drugs side of things is a bit harder amoxicillian is a widely used antibiotic and works wounders, however in this courty you can only buy it on prescription. In europe you can buy it off the shelf so when on holiday or a mate is get stocked up. Thee 500mg tablets are the best because they are the biggest availiable you neednt buy as many!! Doseage half in the morning half at night. For maximum a week if nesessary but provide you keep the wound clean you'll proabably find 2-3 days will do the trick... However if you go to the vets you can ask them to give you a prescription then buy the pills on the internet cheaper but to be fair its normally the actual consultation that costs the most money but say your vets prescribe you synulox or noroclav(variations of amoxicillian) for a weeks course which is normally standard practice just give half the amount it will probs be strong enough to clear any infection and then you still have some left over!!! and if the infection comes back either after a week either give it the rest of the dose or go back and get some more from the vets either way you should end up with some left over for another day!! FPO 0
all I can say is you are all a bunch of tight fisted ????????. Our youngest got caught on some barb the other day whilst out running with other dog. There is no question of what I would do. Yes it cost £150 BUT no fear of infection as the vet cleaned all the wounds whilst dog was under anithetic and also gave her a dose of tablets. Yeh I could no doubt of bodged her up, but I work on the therory of giving her what I would appreciate myself having in the same cercumstances. If you cant afford the repair fees either dont run them or dont have them in the first palce.

If you cant afford the repair fees either dont run them or dont have them in the first palce. Grow up. My vet bills in 2007 were close to $5000, a pyo, several pups with Parvo, and a broken leg. I was able to pay those bills in full because I don't drag my dogs off to the vet for every little ding, dent, diarrhea, or whatever. I do the majority of my own vet care with my vet's full consent, I can call him and he will gladly tell me which antibiotic to use, he'll write prescriptions to save me money. I am not stupid and I know when I'm out of my league and need to take a dog in to the vet rather than do home care. If you'd rather a vet take care of it, that's your prerogative but don't sell others short.

If you cant afford the repair fees either dont run them or dont have them in the first palce. tigtht fistedness has nothing to do with it...being able to deal with a cut or a bump at the scene or as soon as you get home limits suffering as much as possible...having the knoledge to save you dogs life or to prevent further suffering is what id call a must for the serious dogman/hunter... my vet bills are pretty high as is i know my limits of what i can and cant do... when one of my dogs suffered a twisted gut this year i got him to the vets as i knew he only had a couple of hours to live tops..thankfully he did survive although the bill was £500 opening him up in the shoot carpark with my leatherman was'nt an option that day...heres a couple of before and after pics.. for you fpo if you think im a tight fisted git fine on the other hand i reckon i did ok its a shame i dont take more pics really as ive had to patch one or two up over the years....mine and my friends dogs..you decide mate if your dog got ripped on a fence and was bleeding heavily.. would you a.ask your lamping mate(gary)who has a staple gun stitching kit and all the relevent antibiotics in his first aid box in the car or at home or would you drive 20 miles to the nearest vet at 2am in the morning!! hoping your dog hadnt lost too much blood by the time you got there... ummmm think i know what id do!!!
