ferret washing

its already been said they dont NEED baths.. and yes it does strip the oils from their coats and then they double time it to build it back up and end up stinking worse...but its your choice.. if you wanna get this particular stink off them and let them start out smelling fresh in a fresh hutch go for it.. it wont hurt them either...

but if you need to do so.... i'd do it INSIDE this time of year... use a lil warm water in the bath and or a lil gentle soap.. ie baby shampoo type thing... or dove ... toss a towel into a pillow case and toss the wet ferret into the case... and they'll go mental drying themselves off... dont put them back out in the cold till they are completely dry...

Yep sensible posts like above, don't bother. Mine have just today started to stink. So What!

Any frost could put them at risk, when wet the cold really hits home and could be fatal. The washing thing is for the show ring, not for normal healthy working stinkers.

Just change the bedding regular & clean out the cage everyday as well, i dont wash ferrets , and would only ever do so if it was covered in something that needed getting off its coat

That's the joys of ferrets matey! :D

I put a good layer of pine chippings in the bottom of my court. When I change it, they spend ages trying to tunnel though it, roll around in it, etc.

They don't smell so bad then, for a while, but you'll never get them totally scent free.

I've had to bath mine on occasson, like when I rehomed a hob to a lady for a pet.

As said before baby shampoo works a treat, and mine love plain water to play in.

This time of year I'd rub them as dry as poss, then shove them in a cat basket with dry towels somewhere warm like in front of the stove (not too near) until they're dry.

well I'm certainly the odd one out :icon_redface: my court has a swimming pool fitted, and the ferts love it, and their coats look/feel great, of course they arn't allowed any shampoo to use :D , but they use it, even when it feels cold enough to freeze a brass monkey

hiya tony, ref ferret washing, plain warm but not hot water usually does the trick, but if you've got a real mucky one mild kitten shampoo does the trick! my ferrets don't like the washing but enjoy being dryed off after! Dave, Birmingham.
