Guest Countryboyo
Lads i got a rat trap because rats were eating my rabbits food. the trap has a tunnell going into it and a trap door that opens when the rat steps on it while going for the food. Ive tried every bait. a bit of rabbit food, peanut butter, rasher raw/cooked. saussage raw, fish raw egg raw. I know the rats are there because they burrow into my rabbit cage on my lawn. What the feck am i doing ,wrong lads? also they burrowed under the trap to get at the food from the bottom so I put it on a board but nothing caught now and i have it three weeks. advice appreciated. Its pi$$ing me off that the heures arent being caught after paying 20 euro for it rats are a nervivor and it can take up to 3wks for them to get used to a strange object but i dont rate them traps much mate you should have 1 on a foot plate or a sprinr door from a hook thats what i use and never fail.try leaving the door open as rats dont like things that move when they stand on them Quote Link to post

Matt 160
I'm not quite sure what 'nervivor' means, but rats are certainly neophobic, which means that they will avoid any new objects. It does sometimes take a while for them to accept anything new on their patch, and they can be quite hard to catch in cages. I would suggest that you revert to a kill trap. Fenns in tunnels (JohnB has Fenns for sale) work very well with or without bait, or you could modify a pro victor trap. The most important thing is to make sure that your housekeeping and hygiene is top notch. Clean up any spillages straight away, and store any foodstuffs in rodent proof containers. If you keep livestock, you will from time to time get the odd rat on your premises. Ditchshitter wrote a very good piece in the 'living off the land' section sometime ago about keeping chickens and rats. It is worth a read, I'll find you a link. Matt 160
Fenns work well, and are easy to use: If you have a good session with the traps, the result sometimes looks like this: Quote Link to post
flyfree86 38
hi, ive heard chocolate is a good bait for rats and squrriels.has anyone tried it?ive had a rat come in from the fields and get under my shed over early xmas.i bolted it with the ferret for my dads harris.since then i run the ferret under evry now and then usually before a day out!.i now set a cage trap and blocked all the holes,no sign of any rat todate, also what method would you use to despatch the rat in/from a live trap.? dean 29 27
I suggest you light a fire and let the smoke go into the trap (dont put the trap on the fire), The rat can probably smell your scent on it, or the scent of a previously caught rat. I had a problem with my trap for a while, i let some smoke get to it to take the smell of me off it and its been working great, i do this after every rat caught as well. Quote Link to post
