I am a carpenter and since I finished Broadmead shopping centre in Bristol work has been few and far between! I have had to go between agencies to try and get work. Three weeks before christmas I tried to get work in the new shopping centre in Cardiff the new St Davids and surprise surprise polish and turks there and no work available! Theres 2 small projects near me but they are not taking anybody on for the next month or two. So im just doing hobbling as much as I can! Nearly every builder I know near me are out of work and thats including some of the english boys I work with so I know that theres pretty much no work anywhere. A good friend pf mine who is also a carpenter has gone paye working in a factory!

i laid off 3 joiners and three brickies two weeks ago fecking wage bills are cripplers, finnishing the job off my self. goverment needs to lean on the banks to get mortgages availble to first time buyers again. they give billions to banks but would be better throwing it at the building industry as the population would soon feel the benefit.

My o/h builder, thankfully he was doing large job up til xmas & another one since then. He also does kitchen fitting & he's been doing a few recently but its slowing down. I've just been laid off from office job in construction office.

The works there but everyone holding off. Even the big housebuilders have slowed down from 2 houses a week to 1/2 house a week just to keep lads working.

Seen adverts for fast tracks electricians & gas fitting- at least with them you 've got a chance with council.

theres always been people with no work even in the boom period, but this recession/depression theres blokes out there, good decent tradesmen with nothing,people whom have never been out of work before looking for work that isnt there ,its going to get a lot worse before it gets better,ive heard people say "well you will just have to ride it out" fine if you are in a position to do that, most are not(myself included) just hope that it picks up soon, everyone i know are by the skin of their teeth hanging on to their houses.the banks are in so much shit ,that at the first chance they are pulling overdrafts and repossesing houses, gloom and doom
