I'm after a digital camera that gives me an instant take as soon as I hit the shutter button. I need to take wildlife/pest control pictures involving birds and my non-DSLR digital has a big delay so I usually miss the subject and end up with an image full of sky. I was considering a DSLR such as the Nikon D40 but they are not cheap. My question is what type and price of camera will give me this instant reaction?

have you tried putting it into sport/shutter mode as it takes a few pics fast so you end up getting one

The compact fixed lens digi cams always suffer from shutter lag and they are not very fast at focussing, so the only way to go is a DSLR...

or there are these very strange things called film cameras... they are getting quite rare now, but they are very cheap :)

Thanks for all replies. Looks like a DSLR then. I like the quaint idea of a film camera, maybe B&W ;) but I suppose the convenience of downloading digital images and including them in documents and reports and even forums makes them just too compelling these days. After all I'm a pest controller wanting to use photos to enhance my work rather than a photographer.

Who makes the 300D and 350D?

Canon, but you're looking at S/H from ebay or similar. 300D

more 300Ds

The 350D is the model that replaced it, so expect to pay a little more for one of those.

If you've any doubts about the 300D, this pic was taken with one...

It managed to keep up with my collies :)
