ferreting question

Recommended Posts

We're interested in getting into ferreting with atleast 1 of our current 5 ferret jills..........but someone has said to us if we want to get her into rabbiting then we should feed her live food like mice! I know this illegal in the UK, and have no interest in feeding them live mice! But I was just wondering if it was true what we were told? I've never heard of anyone saying they feed their ferrets live food to get them in training for ferreting!

If you have permission with rabbits on,go & give the jills a run out & see which one(s) take to it.Do you have locator, nets & all the other gear you require for a days ferreting??

Vast majority of ferts will explore these dark, damp tubes out of curiosity anyway & move some rabbits out into your waiting nets.Never fed a fert live mice meself & never will.................

No need in live mice for training and yes its illegal.

Ferrets will chase rabbits on instinct(well most), the training day need will happen underground in the bunnies warrens. Main training you can do is make sure you can pick them up out side their caged environment without them running of scared, so lots of handling which it sounds like you already do.

You would need to learn what to do if your ferret don't come back out of the warren before you go out, are you going to use a locator or go old fashion?

We haven't got the gear (locator, nets, etc or permission) yet, we're looking to watch and learn right now (I know we're running out of time as people are stopping rabbiting now) and then buy our gear throughout the summer!

Thanks for your advice about giving all our jills a go each.............the reason we thought only one would be suitable is because:

Bino - is friendly yet still has a little bit of fiesty-ness in her.........and has some balls (but really is a girl!!!!)

Boba - I really can not trust her not to run off! She's constantly trying to escape.......I know that's what ferrets do.....but she does it all the time!!!!

Diggle - is 8 months going on 8 weeks!!!!! She's very young and playfull........we worry she would try and play with the rabbits! And she's quite skittish sometimes!

Mortisha - Is a gorgeous little girl, but she is very skittish! She's easily scarred and darts off like a bat out of hell!

Then there's Qai - she's a princess who hates getting her feet wet........wont even walk on the cage floor when I've wiped it with babywipes!!!!!

But maybe you're right and I should give them each a go.........they may suprise me!
