dickyboy 1
right the story goes.........he has a retained testicle so it has to come out(surgery) he is also a wandery sort of dog always off looking so was considering castration of both rather than just one nut! If both were to come off when is the right time to do it I will be letting him mature fully before i do anything as there is no rush about 14months i thought I would like him to take the odd fox(once the *** is lifted of course, and we live in hope) and he is showing good potential, ragging skins/shot ones with gusto and he is definately the size for it. He is 9 months old in a week....i may have liked to breed from him but i think he'll be a much better dog without and i've always said i would never have another dog done. Basically would it be better to get him doing fox before they come off or does it make no difference??? Quote Link to post

Having a retaine dtesticle can carry a high risk of becoming cancerous. You should not breed from a dog with a retained testicle as this is 99% hereditary, even if the sire had a full set, it can pass down from any generation. I would get him donee when he is 12 months old, by then he will be sexually mature, well he is now, but he will be more mature then. Regarding the foxes, if he has it in him already, then castration will make no difference at all. Once a dog has become sexually mature, there is usually no change in character. It's when they are done at about 6 months old, when male hormones haven't even had enough time to set in that a male dog then never really becomes one. My daughters dog was done at 6 months old and he is the total opposite to my entire ones, he sqauts to toilet and hasn't built any muscle and hes basically female. BUT my male castrated dog was done at 12 months, by then he was mature, he was cocking hisleg, mounting bitches, became a bit arrogant around other entire males etc. Getting him done had no effect on him and he still works well. "Dosnt affect them in the slightest " Mate ,a castrated dog is the lowest of the low in the pecking order of a pack [if the animals are roughly same age].I can only speak from what Ive seen but a mate had a lurcher dog given to him that I knew took fox .That was before he was castrated and now he runs beside and barks his head off?.Only my experience with one dog . Guest Duzabit
Have him done about 16-18 months, this will have given him time to physically mature. The testes produce hormones to develop all the male characteristics, head size , etc. As for taking fox, they don't kill them with there bollocks, he either will or he won't. Duz Quote Link to post
