rabbit cages

just wondering if anyone has had any success at caging rabbits while theres snow on the ground , i was watching a rabbit today , come right up a field to where a farmer had dropped a small bit of siliage on the road side and the rabbit was comming for a feed, theres about 1-2 ft of snow about and the poor buggers are starting to get proper hungry ,thought i might make the best of it and try cage trapping em

I have had some good results in the snow when at other times you struggle to catch in the area. I have noticed of that that soggy fields have a lot to play in the catch rates. Dog walkers and the general puplic are another factor.

 

If you have a quite area with little distubance then its worth a go. Only down side is they heavy but if can get them out there why not.

dog walkers /pubic not a problem , nor is getting them there , there are small areas without snow on the track side , i was fancying setting them there baited with carrot etc

You can have a lot of success cage trapping rabbits in adverse weather conditions....especially snow. From my past experiences i have found that rabbits make a bee-line for any exposed grassy areas...IE under sheltered trees/bushes etc. These are the best places to set the cages, as are sheltered fence lines and hedgerows. baited with carrots they will soon attract the foraging rabbits eager to obtain an additional food source. Once a cage has caught.......it increases the catch rate imensely if left in exactly the same spot as the ground beneath becomes nicely scented with rabbit droppings and urine.

I run a cage trap line all year round and always have the most success when the natural food supplies are at there lowest. Hope this has been of some help.

not quite 3 per cage , but i set 28 cages on tuesday , took 2 out befor i came home , 9 the following morning and 11 today , so its worked quite well , trouble is one of the keepers told me this afternoon that some were almost blown over with snow so not expecting too much in the morning

not quite 3 per cage , but i set 28 cages on tuesday , took 2 out befor i came home , 9 the following morning and 11 today , so its worked quite well , trouble is one of the keepers told me this afternoon that some were almost blown over with snow so not expecting too much in the morning

 

I always pin my cages to the ground with 18 inch T bars........this stops old Charlie rolling the cages about to get at the rabbits and also holds the cage tight to the ground to prevent movement......which if the rabbit detects will be reluctant to enter.

another 14 today , so its certainly working , a couple of cages were part filled with snow and the doors didn,t drop right down , so some escaped , i also moved the ones that are not catching to an area near a sheep feeder that has producd 4 from 4, twice and 3 from 4 today, i fasted he cages open , baited them well and will set them all again monday, thanks for the help

those that were drifted were dug into drifts next to the road and the snow just blew back in , snows starting togo now so it shouldn,t be a problem
