hhmmm beech or walnut..... if you,ve got a nice piece then go for walnut cos beech has been done to death and if you use 2 pieces of sacraficial wood clamped either side it will stopp it from breaking out, i assume you mean the front end of the stock as the grain should be running length ways so its probably best to chissel out from the top ;)

chimp mate its not that i dont have a clue i just dont have a milling machine and was wondering how to do it without. Walnut it is i have a huge block of it.

Hello bud,

The best way to inlet a stock is with a router, and some chisels and rasps and files,, that's what I've done and its fine,,

hope this helps mate,

Rob..

Ah hah i have a router and chisels and files.

What you have to make sure is that you do the inlet off a square edge? so after drawing the design on your blank plane one of the edges square and this will be where you inlet,, I might have some pics if you need em bud,,

Im in middle of designing a new stock for my gun, might not come of much. im using auto desktop inventor, very clever bit of software. ive also made a new brass bolt and trigger guard.

But im going to cheat and use computer numericaly controlled (cnc) router and laser cutters:D

Good luck with stock mate, post some pics of process
