Toka 10 Posted February 6, 2009 Report Share Posted February 6, 2009 Hi..i am now in the process of applying for a joint shotgun/Fa Certificate [cant spell that Coter..... thing] i owned a 12g baikal single barrel ejector when i was a lad and made good use of it. i am looking for a shotgun that my wife could use as well [hoping to get her into coming out with me], i already do some pest control for some friends and would now like to add pigeon to my list. this is ontop of having got a pup for flushing/ratting, so the shotgun will get more use than the rifle or airrifle with him. as with most things now cost is the main factor...my wife could easily handle a 12g but i was wondering if a 4.10 or 20g would beter suit my needs. sad as it may be i would love another baikal 12g s/b ejector, it was not that much slower than a double barrel with the ejector working and i really liked my first gun. i will buy second hand and am wondering how different the cartridge costs are between 12,20 and 4.10 are, as this may be the deciding factor. i uesd to be a reasonable shot so dropping to a 4.10/20 would not bother me but i just wonder if a 12g would be more practical,part of me thinks that a small 4.10 for the occasional rabbit or pigeon may suit better. my permissions have problems with rats, rabbits and some pigeons and others also shoot over the land so often i am after a rabbit or a couple of pigeon for the pot rather than 'serious' pest control. all advice welcome... claybusers al 9 Posted February 6, 2009 Report Share Posted February 6, 2009 if its cost of shells 12b is cheapest then 20b then .410 as you dont realy have a clue and are open to suggestion i would steer clear of a single but could always get a semi auto baikals are good basic robust guns your right to go down the S/H market a good S/H branded is better than a new cheapy have you got mates you can try there guns or a local clay ground you can pop along to and have a go of a few different guns Quote Link to post

Toka 10 Posted February 11, 2009 Author Report Share Posted February 11, 2009 hi..got a good gunshop at Standish, he will help and probably help to fit the gun. i am sure he will regularly get s/h guns in. if i get one private sale i would take it to him anyway to get it checked. i remember some of the gun fit stuff, drop and length of stock etc so hopefully if i go private sale i wont go far wrong. i'm not in a hurry...application sent off yesterday.... can anyone post cost of shells, i know cost wise it is 12,20,4.10 but what is the difference between the actual cost just ot give me an idea. i will probably buy a 100 at a time... The most flashy/expensive gun in the shop is of no use to you if it does shoot where you look. Doubly important as wifey is likely to be built differently, may have to compromise or learn to shoot "off" Don't expect to get a gun altered to fit, if you are talking s/h and budget it just wouldn't be cost effective. With that in mind I wouldn't buy private unless you have the chance to try the gun for size 1st. Get to several gun shops and handle as many as you can, one will eventually fall into place. My 1st sg was a Baikal 12g o/u ejector, bought perfect 2nd hand, taught me a lot and sold for little loss 4 years on. Not a single problem in that time. I'm wanting to try a 20g s/a, but no one I know has one, (due to injury I want to reduce recoil). Good luck. Edited February 11, 2009 by cyclonebri1 Quote Link to post

Since I had a double fracture of the skull a couple of years ago, the 12bore kick is enough to affect my sense of balance, not good when you've still got one up the spout Quote Link to post
