smasher 1,055
just a quick question to the more experianced breeders on here. in the litters bred from father to daughter matings, did more of the pups make the grade than in a litter of unrelated worker to worker?? and was the standard of the pups produced normally as good as the sire and dam?I sure hope so,because like yourself i have also bred a litter of pups this way, which are all with myself and people i know and dig with so i will know exactly how they turn out, what i had planed was to put the original dog to a good proven bitch and then one of there offspring back to one of the father/daughter pups i have recently breed, thus keeping things tight, Quote Link to post
Guest whitser
im not keen on too much inter breeding. i certainly use an out cross on the next litter. close in breeding exagerates good points but will also exagerate bad points. even in nature in breeding will ocour but not generation after generation of deliberate close inter breeding, there'll always be new blood brought in. labsnlurchers 39
Father/daughter - mother/son - brother/sister -> 25% Half-brother/half-sister -> 12.5% Uncle/niece - aunt/nephew -> 12.5% Cousin -> 6.25% 12.5% is the recommended 'safe' linebreeding option and in my opinion will still keep the line tight enough but you still need to know all you can about all the breeding history. I have recently lined my bull x dog whos sire was the gimp to my bitch whos grandsire was the gimp, the plan is to keep a couple back to line with my other bull cross bitch who is sired by the gimp. Once you get a line that makes your grade more than once you'd be a fool not to keep it going so thats what im doing, dont think ill ever work any other line of bull cross because the gimp line has done more than enough to prove its worth to me. Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Ive argued till im fed up in the past with people who've breed from stuff that is working but the breeding is unknown, only to throw a litter of jackers and they wonder why ! I know people have to start somewhere but homework is the key to finding lines that give a good percentage of workers . Quote Link to post
TOPPER 1,809
Ive argued till im fed up in the past with people who've breed from stuff that is working but the breeding is unknown, only to throw a litter of jackers and they wonder why ! I know people have to start somewhere but homework is the key to finding lines that give a good percentage of workers . i know the problem mate ive done exactly the same myself , but on the other hand ive bred father to daughter[ known breeding] and ive just done half sister to half brother again know breeding in the future i intend to mate my bedlington bitch to her half brother if she makes the grade she looking very promising so far so fingers crossed, it not rocket science to breed good dogs its more common sense but sadly these days thats a rare thing. top Quote Link to post
