markp76 0
Any thoughts folks on the bet way to get your pup used to walking on a lead? Took mine out 3 times now {after practice work in the garden} and on every occasion he'll walk 30 to 40 ft then dig his back legs in and stay where he is, no amount of cooing and good boys will get him moving again so it's turning in to a dog carry as well as a walk, i'm prety sure he's gona get used to it in time but is there any way to speed the process up a little? runforyourlife 361
Many many pups do this mate, no one can recommend a quick way, they are all different. Just keep at it, 3 times is nothing. You will have a lot more work to do if youare going to train it to hunt... Quote Link to post
dangergirl 13
My pup did the same, i just attched a light lead to his collar, and let him drag that around following me. After a few minutes pick it up and see how you get on. If he digs his heels in again, drop the lead and run away from him. When he returns, praise him and pick up the lead and try again. Hope this helps, it worked for me. DG Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
You don't say how old your pup is: it is natural for a pup not to want to leave the safety of its home, and if you notice very young pups in the nest they venture just a few feet before returning to their nest. It is instinct that makes them want to learn the way back to their nest quickly when they start to explore, and the same applies when you take the pup outside its home. I routinely carry my pups at 8 weeks old down to the end of the lane and back. They usually start off walking on the lead but when they get about 30 yards from the gate they stop: I then pick them up, carry them down to the main road and sit there watching the traffic go by. They always run back home when we do return. Don't try and go too far to begin with, and I see nothing wrong with carrying a nervous pup for a bit, then put it down and sit there with it, then encourage it on again: just a couple of feet. Crouch down and let the pup sit between your legs for security and always be patient: it sometimes takes nervous pups a couple of weeks before they dare to go any distance. If your pup wasn't socialised at all before you got it your job will be harder: it is very important to get as many new sights and sounds into a pup before it hits 16 weeks old, for that is the age at which it will be impossible for it to adjust well if it has seen nothing outside its home. Hi if the pup digs his heels in and wont budge, when he does this and your saying good boy and that to try and encourage it to walk.If your timeing is wrong the pup will think your saying good boy and that as a reward to digging its heels in.This will make it harder to get him to stop. If he walks 30 ft and digs his heels in,only walk him 20 ft and turn back before he digs his heels in. Ive experienced with pups like that,if you bring it for a walk with another dog can help. As a last resort you could bring the pup to where there is a grass surface and drag it a little and see how it gets on.The pup will learn that your not giveing in to its digging its heels in and should learn to stop. If the pup chases a ball you could have its mind occupied with the ball instead of not walking.Hold the pup on the lead and show it the ball in your hand. Quote Link to post
