old dog 210
It's that time of year with me that i get lambing call outs, this is the first one this year, jack phoned to say he had 4 lambs taken, the problem jack has got is a big plantation of cover right next to his fields,we had been there a month earlier and shot 2 but we missed a few because of the shortage of guns available on the day,i was met that morning with jack carrying a lamb under one arm and holding a bucket in the other,he showed me the lamb he was carrying had puncher wounds around his neck and on top of his head, this one was lucky he would survive, but the one in the bucket had been beheaded he was number 5,unboxing hounds in the field above the cover, hounds found a line and were in full cry by the time they hit the fence jumping over and entering the cover, because we were down in a valley the music was bouncing of the opposite side,it sounded great, the hounds had gone into a dense patch of bramble and pushing they're quarry hard,a single shot rang out and i though that was it,but hounds continued on down the cover to a river, turning left handed and heading back up into a forest plantation, through that and headed back into where they had first started, going down the middle of the cover, where this one was also stopped by the same gun.We moved on then to a fern bank where hounds found another one,but they struggled on this one, they were going at some pace but not speaking only the odd times, they would lose the scent have a check find it again, and go racing off at pace again, this continued for about 20 minutes until in the end they had very little cover left to work, she had no option but to break cover and run the field, where she was accounted for by one of the farmers, hounds were entered then back into the cover where after a time put another one off, good scent on this one and hounds were pushing him hard, out of the fern back into a foresty block around that and out on to the fields above,i could hear some shouting, then i was told on the cb, that gareth's lurchers had caught him going across the field,4 accounted for and one happy farmer, happy days.
