Hi people,

just looking for some advice on ratting as never done it before with ferrets.

I have just got permission on and around a livery so plenty of food stores and that about for the horses, hoping to be a hobby for the summer for the ferrets and dog.

I got a big hob so will he be to big for their runs?

will one dog be enough?2 3 would be better i guess.

Ferrets getting bitten any problems with that?other than it hurts.

When i last went years ago we just moved hay and stuff about to bolt them for the dogs.

Any advice much appreciated!

3 terriers needed i reckon i wunt risk a ferret wi rats

Great fun mate you want a little gill theyre better at getting through the holes and nine times out of ten the rats just bolt its only on the odd occassion the rat will take on the ferret. My old russell bitch youst to love ratting with the ferrets my old ferret gill youst to grab the rats by the bum just before they bolted and the terrier would grab em off the ferret great stuff youst to up behind the curry houses up by me

I've used mine on the rats in the past, usually under pallets and in piles of junk, like Penda says, most rats will just escape and run, thats how they are. Mine got a few nicks and cuts about them, but not half as bad as what happened to the rats if they were cornered! :whistling:

i can see your not just saying any ferret your talking about a big hob yes. ut a ferret down a rat hole and you got one hell of a fight on your hands 90% of the time your ferret wil get hurt.

to me you sound like some one who usees amimales for fun only

Not being funny or anything mate but iv worked alot of ferrets to rats and iv rarely come across a rat that will face a ferret they will try and retreat most of the time if a ferret was in the wild it would be feeding off such things as rodents i,e rats so i dont see what the problem is to be honest with ya :hmm:

I find that the sound of the smoker gets on my nerves sometimes - last year we used ferrets a bit and i enjoyed it more without the monotonous whine of the smoker in the background all the time. the dogs can scent better too.

also, rats will bolt from one hole to another and see the dogs then will not bolt again. they will rather sit in the hole and put up with the smoke making the rat fall asleep and ultimately die in its hole if it is continuously pumped with smoke. a rat with a ferret on its tail is more inclined to bolt. smoke will not seek out rats - it finds the path of least resistance through a set - a good ferret will smell the rats and head straight for them.

in my teens when i first got in to ratting it was always ferrets as i didnt have a smoker - jills were better than the hobs.

my advice is give it a go and see how you get on. some places will be better smoked others will be easier ferreted.

its obvious you havent watched the rallyscene dvd's, "the ultimate ratting" ones, as you can now get non petrol, non noisy smokers "the rat attack"

as for dogs scenting better, they have far better noses than use, we may only smell petrol, and pig shit, but they smell rats too

we will all have different opinions on this matter,

so maybe best if we leave it at that, it can be seen by the posts, that some do, and some dont, I think ratting with ferrets is purely down to the individual
