hickso 0
Hi people, just looking for some advice on ratting as never done it before with ferrets. I have just got permission on and around a livery so plenty of food stores and that about for the horses, hoping to be a hobby for the summer for the ferrets and dog. I got a big hob so will he be to big for their runs? will one dog be enough?2 3 would be better i guess. Ferrets getting bitten any problems with that?other than it hurts. When i last went years ago we just moved hay and stuff about to bolt them for the dogs. Any advice much appreciated! Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
I don't like ratting with ferrets, to me its terrier work, other peoples veiws may differ. Quote Link to post
mattydski 560
I agree, Rats are terrier work. Or though I have bolted Rats. Get a smoker, and a terrier.. or bolt to a .410 if safe to do so., great sport. Quote Link to post
hickso 0
Taking a terrier as well, who is very safe with the ferrets. Quote Link to post
hickso 0
410 sound a good idea i'll have to ask, not had a good look around yet. Quote Link to post
jazz_11 5
i wouldnt use my ferrets at all..... but its ment to be good why dont you just ask the farmer to get a fork lift or summin to pick up the bales, and the rats will just run then but 1 dog wont be enough... Quote Link to post
swagboy 9
i do a lot of rating have used ferrits but the rats gangd up on the ferrit and killd it but when we got the smoker working we had well over 100 under a lorry boddy nether used ferrits sins convert a old chanesaw is the best thing Quote Link to post
para1 11
Don't use ferrets on rats mate.1 rat now and then by accident would be fine but they do gang up when in numbers. Your big hob would be no match for a rat in confined spaces small jills are better. Better than that is a smoker and min 2 terriers.Real good fun. Quote Link to post

Think i'll just go with a few dogs, hopefully get some permission for rabbits on her friends farms or something. cheers all. as already advised, terriers and a smoker are best, doing a good job this way, can sometimes open more doors, to new permissions, people are always happy to praise when a jobs well done Quote Link to post
The one 8,479
They will be starting to breed soon so i wouldnt want to ferret them some fen mk4's in tunnels and get the farmer to check them unless you live close by Quote Link to post
BenBhoy 4,706
yeah, follow the advice. not a good idea at all, no matter how big your hob. i've got one who you could mistake for a polar bear but i wouldnt put him in rat nest. if it's for serious pest control then get traps out.
