herdwick 52
On the phone to a friend this evening (who incidentally has a website some people may be interested in, www.cumbrian-lad.com.) and the subject of foxes and terriers came up. Basically he said that terriers bred years ago by the likes of Joe Bowman and Tommy Dobson had to geal with a different type of fox from the little red jobs we get today. These foxes, known as greyhound foxes, weighed up to 23 lbs and were grey in colour, rather than red, a much bigger animal than today's red fox. Much interest is shown in breeding and bloodlines of todays terriers, some claiming they can trace their dogs line back to the days of Joe Bowman, Tommy Dobson, Willie Porter etc. but has anyone done any research or does anyone know anything about these greyhound foxes? There have been reports of them from all over the country, Dartmoor, Exmoor as well as the Lake District although it is thought they died out early in the last century. Quote Link to post

Are you sure it wasnt an infant that started this topic? or maybe a beast that is a half man half fox hybrid came down from his cave and broke in to your house and started it? let us know when you find out, cheers pal? shotup 9
old british foxes where on average bigger than they are today because during the 18 and 19th century foxes where imported from france to be released into hunt countries where foxes had become scarce so as to lessen the chance of a blank day when drawing the field. these imported foxes were smaller on average than thier british cousins and as a result were responsible for the smaller decline in size today. dog fox 16
me and orion off here had a nearly fully grey one with about a 1/4 of red on it ,orion shot another half grey one and another lad said he,d had a half grey one .all from the same area ,but they were definatly red fox,s just a lot of grey on them ,it was not a tinge of grey they were fully grey to look .they have built a big industrial site on the land and the farm has moved ,but if we get any more i will put a pic up as we do still go there on the odd accasion Quote Link to post
FOXHUNTER 5,021
I can gaurentee that we got a red fox today and it was over 20lb maybe 22lb-24lb! Did you weigh this fox? If not you dont know how heavy it was . A 24lb fox is huge and the fox you posted a pic of certainly wasnt 20 lb. Until you weigh a 20lb fox you have no idea how heavy it is , I have accounted for hundreds of foxes over the years and the heaviest was 21 1/2 lb weighed on scales and believe me it was big. There is a lot of talk about big foxes but most of it is bullshit as most people never bother to actually weigh them they just guess. Quote Link to post
Guest Countryboyo
I agree get the scales out and take a photo of the reading on the scales. It was a big fox miller got in fairness Quote Link to post
