clachan 72
I have a question for all you digging lads out there.I had a Lakeland bitch which i purchased in 2004 at the age of 8 weeks.I reared her and she took to rats squirrels ect. around 8 months. She self entered to her first fox at 13 months and never looked back. She wasnt a hard terrier but would certainly mix it,but never realy took what i would call a really sore one.I had two good seasons with her in which we dug around a dozen foxes, most of which were 30-60mins.But we did have several digs over the two hour mark(one of which was 4).In April we have to check all the dens for all the local farmers due to heavy lamb losses(if we dont we lose permission). We checked a hole which was stinking of cubs.Game bird feathers ,lambs everywhere. The bitch refused to enter.WE entered another terrier and bolted the vixen Now i know that around these times the scents are different but the same happened two days latter. We had a guest with us the first day so i was a little embarristed to say the least.I parted with the bitch not long after this but cant help thinking that i may have been a little hasty in doing so.So my question is . 1.Should i have kept the bitch for winter digging only? 2.Is this just a case of the dog spuing? 3.What are your thoughts? Cheers clachan Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
I've known two hard fox killing Lakie bitches who refused to go to ground if there were cubs in there: mine, the daughter of the first bitch, actually brought out cubs unharmed if they were small enough and attempted to mother them: that could be your answer. I certainly wouldn't get rid of the bitch for that reason: just take another dog along with you that will do that particular job. Quote Link to post

Cheers for your comments lads.THe bitch had worked one the earths before and the other was nothing more than a scraped out rabbit hole.As i said before i may have been rash with the dog but hindsite is a wonderfull thing. When i passed the bitch on the lad was well aware of her faults so never used her at cubbing, but has dug to her. alimac 882
we have had hard dogs bring cubs to the enterance just like a vixen would carry them, not a mark on them, and not just one, sometimes the whole litter, and not just on one occasion either... like wise iv seen lurchers refuse red cubs that have bolted, yet they do rabbits and adult foxs no prob..... nothing as strange as nature personally i would have tryed it again, if it was not letting you down the rest of the year Quote Link to post
TOPPER 1,809
i used to have a very hard bitch that would bring cubs to the entrance un harmed the whole litter not just the odd one but if she bumped into the vixen she would have no respect for her whats so ever sadly shes no more , personally i think you were a bit hasty but as you say hindsight is a wonderful thing , all the best Top Quote Link to post

clachan 72
Well lads i thank you for your responses. It seems more common than i first expected. One of the reasons i posted is that, the bitch left my kennels almost two years ago.I have had several bitches since none of which have reached the standard of the bitch in question.Thats what got me thinking in the first place. If im using that bitch as a bench mark for the others she couldnt have been that bad. matt11 0
am the same as you clachan, have to muck around with cubs as i will lose alot of estates but some dogs i have founs are good at doing them and had a couple that arent, even when there are still vixens still living in and out with them.every dog is different, one of my mates bitchs is a cracking digging dog but wont entertain any thing to do with cubs but he has just accepted this and the bitch still has its kennel space.
