Back out with Floyd: end of the shoots

Recommended Posts

Yesterday saw the first of our trips down to Floyds for a spot of ratting at the end of the shooting season. We set off bright and early meeting up with Floyd, young Floyd and his mate who hadn't been ratting before, along with his dog Fenn. We'd had quite a bit of success previously at the first game crop we went to, particularly in a hollow tree which is where we started off. We must have been doing a good job controlling the rats in the previous two years we've been going as the rat numbers did seem to be down. The dogs worked well, marking and catching, with very few missed, even the ones that bolted into the uncut maize - very difficult to catch. This is where my pup, on her first season doing this kind of ratting really surprised me - she kept catching the bolted rats which I hadn't expected. To say I was delighted by the way she worked is an understatement - she took a fair few bites and it didnt put her off in the slightest. Her face was swollen up like a football last night, but its gone down this morning nearly back to normal. We spent the morning on the first game crop then moved on to a couple of other places although in some of them there were no signs of rats at all and shooting only finished on Saturday, which was very surprising. Anyway, we had a good day, all dogs working their socks off, most of the rats caught were dug, although a few were smoked out from rock piles. A few pics from our day, theres quite a lot. Looking forward to our next trip :D
