my HGV licence v sleep apnea

Recommended Posts

does anyone know what happens regarding your licence if you are diagnosed with sleep apnea

back in july i got pneumonia and spent 2 weeks in intensive care and was in a pretty bad way and luckily i came through it

have had to keep going back to hospital for treatment but last week had to see a specialist who said that looking through all my records since i had been in hospital he noticed i stop breathing while i am asleep

my wife has always told me that i do this along with i snore very badly since we got married 24yrs ago but never thought anything of it

anyway i had to wear this machine thingy on my wrist while asleep and it records how many times this happens

he is saying i suffer from sleep apnea and have to go back in may for tests but also said i may have to inform the dvla

like i said this is nothing new to me cos the wife digs me a milloin times a night to stop me snoring and if i have this sleep apnea i must have had it for over 20yrs or more and it has never affected me during the daytime or while driving , i was on the road full time for over 16 yrs on the artic trucks driving all over europe when driving a truck wasnt just getting in and setting the satnav to get you there it was long hours and all done my maps

although i only do odd driving jobs over to ireland and the odd bit of uk work i dont want to lose my HGV licence at 44 if i can help it

i have been told by other hgv drivers that if i am diagnosed with this i will lose my HGV licence

does anyone know the full script about this and does it mean i will lose my hgv licence full stop orisit tempory

thanks

My husband snores every night, but what he does is has a long snore then he stops , i count to 10 & if he hasnt exhaled i yell at him to breath, it is a worry when he does that & to be honest in his case its worse when he has drunk loads & the snoring is so loud you can hear him outside the house with all the windows shut  as my neighbour told me when he walked past with his dog early one morning

I also know someone with this condition, and he uses a machine & mask thingy at night. It looks a bit scarey, but does solve the snoring/stopping breathing problem, and at last he can get a good nights kip. He was in the habit of roaring around in vehicles with blue lights on, and as far as I know there was never any mention of the sleep apnea being a problem.

Good luck, I hope you will get to keep your licence.
