As a starter a harris hawk or a redtail is a good choice as both will take fur and feather if trained properly. You really want to get a bird of the year so you can train it from scratch yourself rather that potentially risk buying someone elses problem cast off. Not all second hand birds are dodgy but as a beginner you might not be able to spot problems until they manifest themselves and by which time you could well end up hurt especially with a feisty redtail. A youngster can be moulded by you and taught manners and behaviour onthe glove and on a kill and you'll get a lot more satisfaction. A goshawk is a gear up really unless you've an experienced mentor to guide you and they're a little more complicated health wise and theres a few more precautions you need to look at. A mentor or joining a club would be useful to you as would a serious mate who could take you out with a view to actually guiding your first purchase rather than just showing you what a bird of prey can do. Hope this helps Quote Link to post
