Remington 700 SPS

Variations

700 SPS

700 SPS DM

700 SPS Stainless

I have been considering one of these for a long time now and have the spare slot sitting there.

My concerns are this 24 inch barrel, Edgar Bros are threading them now but will not remove any barrel length. I have held some and fired 1 once in this calibre (no Moderator), but I have had a lot of balance problems with my T3 Lite in .223 with a moderator which already has a shorter barrel. I don't want the same grief with a 24inch flagpole of a barrel on the Remington.

So, Question for owners of any of the 3 variations of the 700 SPS listed above with a moderator fitted. How do you find the balance, is it front heavy, what mod have you got fitted and have you had to have the barrel shortened in desperation.

Whilst we are at it your views on the X Mark Pro trigger and the stock as well.

Simple fact is I want to buy a gun and use it, not buy it, cut the barrel down, get another trigger, change the stock, whatever, if I want to spend that much I would buy a Sako to start with!

Cheers

most of the remmy's 700's are made for the us market and to a good price for them but i have seen a few concerns with some and seen comments on other place's, one said poor opening and closing of the bolt very rough indeed, also there where a few proplems with the extractor claws sheering,

i have seen one at a dealer's here and you would think someone chipped a bit of the crown with a chisel i have also seen this on a web page somewhere, this doesn't take away from the fact that they are good shooting and a hell of a lot better balanced than the t3 with mod on, just give whichever one you have your eye on a close going over,

plus we all know the selection of aftermarket bit's and piece's for the 700's is second to none.....

keep us posted on what you get as i would be intrested to see what you think of the gun you choose..... ;)

the x-mark pro trigger is crisp, predictable, creep free and stupidly heavy! (comes from the land of the lawsuit) also non user adjustable unless you want to strip your allen keys as i did, grub screws for adjustment are glued in place. i'm having the trigger worked on by a smith soon so shouldn't be too much trouble.

the extractor is a joke and any crap caught behind it causes it to smash through the case rim rather than hop over it causing problems closing the bolt and extracting the cartridge. It likes some brands better than others, I have no problems with American Eagle FMJ’s, strangely they use surplus military 5.56 brass (told by my smith, correct me if I’m wrong).

i handled a lot of rifles before i picked the remington 700 sps varmint .223 (how's that for barrel heavy? 26'' of heavy profile chrome moly!) and none felt quite like the 700 and i don't regret buying it.

though hell would freeze over before i bought it for deer or big game hunting where i need 100% reliability for a shot and possibly a quick follow up, for the confidence factor i'm going for a mauser action in 30-06 next (M70, CZ 550?).

X-mark trigger is very definitely user-adjustable, use the right allen key! It's a US size, says in the manual. Took me next to no time.

American Eagle brass is standard federal stuff, nothing ex-military there at all...

One of my 22.250 s is a SPS 700 tactical.

It has been somewhat doctored insomuch that the fluted stainless barrel is original - has a different Remington stock, jewell trigger and bedded onto aluminium. Not got a mod for it. But with home loads this will group .20 @ 100 and 3/4 at 500.

I must say that perhaps I have been lucky with this barrel for a massed produced item.

Based on my experience and also an owner ot 2 Blasers and a Tikka, I would say the Rem 700 is fine.

Yes I am well pleased with it, however I believe that I have also found the perfect round for it and have the perfect (in my opinion!!) cleaning regime.
