Which Rifle?

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

Any sugestions of which make of rifle in 204 ruger cal to go for, I'm a southpaw but I've heard Tikka and other well known makes cater for lefties?

Chap...I have to say the .204 is a pretty specialised round...have you really decided this is what you need???

Although it has been around a few years now it really is little used and they are not leaping off the shelves!! Obviously, as with any calibre, they have their uses, but can I simply start by asking what for, and why have you decided on a .204?? :hmm::thumbs::thumbs:

... hangs head in shame... I was accosted by my FEO the other day about my 243 variation, all sorts of issues that were BS. Anyway he ended up charging me for what is definitely a one-for-one, so I changed things around a bit..

My second 243 slot has become a 204 Ruger slot... So interested to hear which one you go for. I also added another 308, some more moderators and a bit more ammo. What the hell - if they're having 26 quid then I want some stuff!

I don't think Tikka's doing a 204 yet, so might have to be someone else. CZ, Ruger or Howa leap to mind. Not sure about the L/H bits.

As for the uses of the 204, I think there are more than we think about... I found a couple of YouTube videos earlier, some guy in the US hitting groundhogs with it. One of the poor blighters does about a 6-foot high triple-backflip, so it seems to hold its power well :)

Thanks for the replies, I've went for this cal as I intend to use it on corvids at longer ranges than my rimfire would be capable of, I've considered the 17 hmr and 17 rem but it gets very windy on my patch and I feel the 204 covers both of these problems as it doesn't be as affected as much as the 17's. It will also be used on the odd fox at sensible ranges, a 222 or 223 in my view would be overkill 'excuse the pun' for my job. Maybe I'm wrong anyone like to point me in the right direction, ammo can be sourced locally as this cal seems to be gaining abit of popularity!

Well:

Why a .204? Unless you already reload, or only shoot a 100 rounds a year don't bother!

Poss. get a .223, plenty of rifles to choose from, good general purpose round and you can get decent factory ammo anywhere.

I think you should go for a 17HMR and a .243, that way you can smoke crows at 120 yards with the 17, and use the .243

at 100 to 250. Then if you get a chance at a deer you are fixed up with a legal rifle.

Anyway all of the above is trashed if you buy a cheap (rubbish) scope, if you must get a .204, at least obey the laws of

physics and get a 'proper' scope, that means if it costs less than £500 it's no good.

A CZ rifle is perfectly OK with a Leupold (30MM) VX3 LRT which costs more than the gun, trust me, been there done it

and I have a drawer full of 'crap' scopes to prove it, (watch Ebay for surplus).

Have Fun.

The .204cal is a terrific fox round,as many a fox will testify,it is devastating when it hits.I will agree, that it would be better to reload for it,but,as you say that you should be using a .243 on crows out to 100-150 yds, then you would definitely be needing to reload then at £1.00 a round!!

I have just got a Ruger MkII 77 with a varmint barrel,so,I would definitely suggest you go for it mate.....and,have some fun...............martin.

Oh,and,I just put a 3-15x56mm Nightforce on top as well........happy days.

This round has been a bit controversial since it was launched.

Some swear by it, others stand well back. It will be interesting to see just how many .204 users there are out there.

I think that Rabbit has a headache Rob

Mr L, I'm surprised your licensing department even bothers to speak to you any more, by the time you've put the phone down, you want something different

I think he has his own comfy chair in the Firearms reception!!! :whistling::whistling:

It is comfy there actually, the Firearms department has it's own building away from Police HQ and it is like a "smart" office reception!!!

It has adapted to its customers, so with the workload Mr L gives them, it must feel like home :D

Impressive stuff you've just confirmed that the .204 is what i'm after, yes i totally agree ammo is expensive but hopefully if the round gets more popular the price may come down. Still waiting on the grant to come through its only been 4 months they're abit slow in my neck of the woods! Will let you know how i got on but thanks for your replyhttp://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif
