john hubery 9 Posted February 1, 2009 Report Share Posted February 1, 2009 COMPO is right there are getting to a few more working people with teckle now that there full use is being realised as an all round dog, I have one off the pups featured in earthdog running dog in Colin Didrikson's artical, she is about 8 months old now and starting to hunt with the pack on every thing from rat to deer, in march I'm also picking up an other two pups of Colin a dog and a bitch, one day hoping to have a little pack of teckle to work as rabbit hounds mainly but working as I do if there's some thing else afoot it will be in line for a chase, Fish it's good to see picture's form over the water see these exellent little dog's doing what they should be doing Quote Link to post
COMPO 54 Posted February 1, 2009 Report Share Posted February 1, 2009 Just to add a bit further, the lad i was ferreting with today used to live in France! Teckels are very very common there. In fact you would expect a continental hunter to have a Teckel where we in the UK would expect people to have a Jack Russell, they are that common and widely used abroad And on the continent it really is a one size fits all, they will take the dog , digging, on a wild boar drive, wildfowling whatever they are doing that day! My Teckel is my ferreting dog at th emoment, he is only 6 months old, but will also be my rough shooting dog and ratting dog and whatever else i feel like hunting or get opportunity to hunt, foxes deer etc...occasionally! john hubery 9 Posted February 1, 2009 Report Share Posted February 1, 2009 Jack the pup I have is easyest pup to bring up I have ever had and stock breaking is no problem at all, they just seem to do every thing you want from them Ferreting a couple of weeks ago on the dales first outing with the pack A little something that poped out in front of them Pups and bitch with Colin and chipper smith This bitch as never had her nose of the ground since being six weeks old stock breaking Quote Link to post

Its actually Teckel....its the european (german/french) name for the breed that in this country is incorrectly called the Dachshund......when the first Teckels arrived in the UK, i imagine the conversation went something like...English man...what are those? german man explaining their role rather than the name of the breed.....they are dachs (badger) hundes (dogs), they were called Teckels n europe since creation....the Dachshund we see today has really suffered at the hands of teh KC and as such imported hunting teckels are stil called teckels so you know the difference! In Germany they also call them Dackels and once they are working they are then refered to as Teckel's...in Poland they are Jamniks (i impressed my polish vet when i knew that word!) I travelled europe last year on holiday, belgium,luxembourg,germany,switzerland and France.......in all those countries they use the term Teckel, i saw a lot of Teckels, in Luxembourg it was a Dutch couple i saw with one, i talked to an old boy in switzerland with a teckel......his last words to me "small hunde, but hunt big things", also had a chat with an old french man in the french alps in my broken french, he had two teckels and had given up hunting as he and they were too old! the french man had hunted fox as well as deer and boar with his cheers compo,you learn summit new everyday Quote Link to post
