Out last night at the golf course where I have permission with my 8 month old BeddyxWhip.

Up to now, shes just been out with my 2 JRTs mostly, seen a couple of rabbits even had 1 catch off 1 that slipped away from the terriers.

She has been out on her own with the lamp on occasion, but she has been very half hearted in her running and putting the breaks on as the quarry hits cover.

She has given yap when out with the terriers, in general everything you dont want with your dog.

But, I have kept on feeding her good grub and giving exercise and rest in what I hoped were the right amounts.

I have kept on showing her what I want her to do, trying not to over do and often getting frustrated in the process.

When out checking the wires yesterday, I had come across an area with a lot of bunnies on it and thought it may provide her with an easy slip for a slow dog!!

Got on the course about 11pm and as me and the wife walked up the 1st fairway, we rounded a corner where I know bunnies will sit out.

I said to the wife that this may be OK for a slip to warm the dogs muscles up a bit, no chance of a catch as the bunnies sit to close to cover and my Fly is a slow dog anyway.............

On went the light, and sure enough, 1 is sitting out about 30 yards from cover, it looked a fairly long slip, but hey..............I slipped Fly , but HOLD ON, this wasnt Fly, this was a turbo charged lamping dog with the throttle FULL ON.

The bunnie had started to make for cover when the lamp went on and by the time it had covered 15 yards, she was on terms with it, a few good turns and the bunnie made safety, but was I unhappy, WAS I FECK :D

WHERE HAD THIS DOG COME FROM :D:D:D

I pacced out this slip at 130YDS :o

Trying not to get to excited and on we go, the next shine revealed a goon number of bunnies sitting out, they all start to make a run for it.............single one out and slip Fly again..........she went off like a missile, silent, SHE WAS 2 INCH FROM THAT RABBITS ARSE ALL THE WAY TO COVER AND SHE NEVER EVEN BROKE STRIDE JUST WENT IN TO THE GORSE A FULL SPEED.

She popped out a minute later, but again failed to catch a short whistle and she was back at heel.

Was I unhappy she didnt catch?????????..................NO WAY..........I was bubbling over :D:D:D

This dog was a whole new animal..........

3rd slip, and same result......no catch, but FAST,FAST, FAST AND SILENT

I decided that was enough for 1 night and as we headed back to the Landy she dissapears.........next thing a quick yap and shes put up another on her own..........then to top it all off, she showed more of an intrest in a fox that we spotted in the beam than is healthy for a small 8 month old dog.

We didnt catch 1 bunny but I felt 10 foot tall.............she was a whole new animal.

No great shakes to some I know, but a little vision of what may be for me & my little dog.

SATISFACTION............YOU BETTER BELIVE IT.

no knocking you mate just a couple of questions...

why slip a dog 130 yards away from its quarry especially when 8 month old? surely you want to give the dog confidence on easy runs, where catches will be made. boosting the dogs confidence.

each to there own i guess. but your techniques are totally diffrent to mine.

Hey, I take on board everything you guys have said and I respect that :good: , one thing I aint is a fecking know it all.

But.........

*1.........I no way new that that slip was 130 untill AFTER I paced it out, when the light went on it looked not easy, but not impossible.

*2 Im afraid that the golf course is where my permission is...........and I even though I have places I go that are not strictly mine to go, the bunnies at the course need to be controlled year round.

I leave everthing else for the season.

*3 As for overdoing it, I probaly show her something in the light once maybe twice a month.

If that is overdoing it then so be it....

As for starting her somewhere easy, you will belive it or not.but there aint none round here.

Strike a match and every bunny for 3 miles makes for cover.

You can ask who you like about how easy the ground is around south essex and how many bunnies can be taken on an average night, so Im afraid no very easy slips ;)

What ever happens, I saw an improvement and I was happy & wouldnt life be boring if we all did the same :good:

All the best to all, whatever you do

Its good to hear you accepting our points as some lads would just turn round and say f**k off to our advise-

Obvisouly there isnt many easy places, but fields with dry stone walls etc are the best places to start a young dog, where rabbits bounce of the walls and struggle to find safety straight away!

ferret some rabbits even easy !!

Yep, another good method and if it was winter and not on a golf course then Id do that too..........but the old greenkeeper dont take too kindly to me digging up his GOLF COURSE when the fert lays up.

Allso the golfers dont like dogs on the course in the day, but in any other situation.........spot on advice :good:

Sorry mate but her yapping only goes to show you entered her too young and easy kills you dont get on fast grass i always enter on plough or moorside where the rabbits are easy i know youve got permission but giving tongue imo is a cardinal sin and something that only happened to me once and that was due to running the dog too young pick your ground carefully and only run bunnies the dog has a chance on forget the golf course for a beginner :good:

could it b the dogs opening up cas of the terriers, take it easy & it will all com together,

Nail on the head Stan :good:

She only opens up when with the terriers, but she is silent when alone.

Trouble is, I dont get the time to give them all seperate exercise otherwise I would only take her out alone.

Be great to live in an ideal world.
