ratkilla 35
Hi guys new to this forum and it is great. Just a question and help needed about lurchers and breeds, I am wanting to get a lurcher in the summer but not knowing which cross would be right really. I go out with my mate who has two patterdales and we go digging and ratting a fair bit which is great fun and i was going to get a patterdale in the summer but i will find a good lurcher more useful. So I’m wanting a dog that will be able to work with terriers when foxing and for rabbiting with my ferrets and taking larger game and be able to work the lamp but which cross do you think is right for this? So an all round lurcher is what i am wanting to get, all the help is most appreciated. Thanks Rich Quote Link to post

Tarmac 1
every type of running dog can make a good all rounder, as long as the blood-line is right... don't rush in and by any lurcher, take your time mate and wait for the right thing, which is from genuine workers. I like weaton greyhounds, and also, saluki greyhound / bull greyhound.. :search: Quote Link to post
Guest CharlieC
what kind of lurchers do you like the best Ratkilla? and what kind of qualities do you favour? do you want a fast dog that hunts mostly by sight (point an slip - lol ) or do you want something thats quite clever and uses its nose? (point and wait - lol ) theres tons of lurcher types out there, go out with a few different folk and watch the different dogs work, see what style suits you best, theres good and bad in all crosses, and some of the best dogs are just straight lurcher x lurcher over many generations, like Tarmac says, if theyre bred from good workers, thats a good start, take your time and find a pup that suits you good luck Quote Link to post
ratkilla 35
yes that is true i would like a dog with sight and nose i saw a guy once came after beating, and i saw how his dog do rabbits well and he rated it for foxes to it was a bull greyhound / saluki greyhound what do u guys think about that cross ? what lurcher do u use? does any body favour bull x greyhond as an all rounder Quote Link to post
Guest CharlieC
i like bull greyhounds, i think they make pretty good allrounders, saluki crosses are pretty good too, it all depends on the individual dog. i alwasy used to like collie crosses the best but now I prefer bull breeds Quote Link to post
ratkilla 35
my mate is into collie grey honunds but i do like the bull crosses i think that will suit me i wil try and meet some more bull cross owners in surrey area that i will be able to go with. Quote Link to post
Guest CharlieC
the most important thing is to find a dog that you can click with, if that bond isnt there, you wont work as a team, you need to pick a pup that you really like, off good parents, and make a really strong bond with it before you start working it Quote Link to post
ratkilla 35
thankx for that when i hopefully get my pup in june i will be off college for 3 months so i can start a good strong bond with the dog do u think that the country mans weekly is a good way of finding a pup or try around this forum Quote Link to post
Guest CharlieC
its always best if you can see the parents of the pups working, get an idea what the pups might turn out like, I have bought pups out of the CM weekly in the past and a couple were really decent dogmen who were great guys to talk to dead helpful etc, and a couple others were total merchants, pups werent wormed, or socialised, and parents had done sweet FA, its the same whatever you buy, horse, car, puppy, theres good and bad out there, and It can be hard to spot the bad guys if your new to the game, best thing to do is ask around on here, theres plenty of decent lads and lasses who will keep you right Quote Link to post

Guest BORDERFOX
feck it ill say it. The worst thing you can do is buy a pup then feck off away to college when its settling in and come back expecting a bond with it.espesh a bully cross Either wait till you come back mate and get one or if i was you i wouldnt bother till i knew i had a sound stable platform to begin raising and training your dog. Saying what others are thinking. Quote Link to post
smallmouth 1
Maybe he goes to a local college Borderfox? If not then yes, I agree with what you're saying there. Quote Link to post
ratkilla 35
at the moment i have to stay at college due to the fact i dont drive but when i then i will be ready to get a dog because i will travel in every day i do think about thing instead of rushing into them and messing about. Guest BORDERFOX
if your at college have you really got time for a pup mate? I did a - levels and believe me had hardly any time to myself for 2 years let alone a pup. Quote Link to post
