I wouldnt pop them over the head,

thats unecessery.

im just worreid that my ferret cage will be crouded for to long

Good for you mate.

Nice to see someone considering the consequences before they breed :clapper:

Do you go ferreting Droid? Because if you do, then you would realise if you have a very good line, that you should keep it going. If it means keeping a few, and killing the ones which arent to your satisfaction, then so be it. Thats how the extraordinary ferrets are bred.

Id spose the young lad does have a point, culling has and still does have a very influencial part to play in producing the best workers in dogs anyway and I presume the same applys to ferrets. Im not saying I agree with it.

It isnt something anyone should enjoy, but if you didnt breed it, it would have never had a life anyway. if you pick out carefully what you want and dont want. It can be quick without the kit even knowing what happened. Just dont go head first into breeding like I did. Bloody stupid looking back

What a screwed up and antiquated view. The bottom line is if you cant get rid then you dont breed. . How long have you actually been keeping ferrets for Wilf?

Should be fine mate, if you bring em up healthy they should go round nicely. If not, there aint nowt wrong with a tap on the head ;)

It aint cruel, if its done at birth. If you want to breed your ferrets, for the line quality then you will only want a couple. So knock the rest on the head. I dont expect any of yous would find killing a rabbit cruel, so why not killing a ferret.

will, yet again you put the mouth first, before putting the brain in gear, first you say "if they are brought up nicely" then contradict yourself, saying "a tap on the head at birth" it can only be one or the other surely

go back to the guys first post, asking "should he breed with a hob with overshot jaw, where you tell him to go for it, so he'll breed kitts that either show this defect, or could be carries of it, is this the "extraordinary ferrets" your on about  , so then he can just knock them all on the head as newborn kitts

Dont think he said anything about line breeding.

Ive just looked at your profile and you are just 14 years old but what you have just come out with about keeping a line going is something an old ferreter would have said. I personally think you have been reading the wrong books :doh:

he hasn been reading anything , thats the problem

Seems a weird thing for a 14 year old to come out with.

I'm obviously not the expert you are. You can tell at birth the sex of the kits can you? That way you can tell which you want to keep? And of course at birth they show all the signs of whether they'll be a good worker?!

You'll also want to consider the cost of feeding the kits etc. before you breed. Plus as said before, theres no shortage of good hobs to breed from, why use one with a defect that could be hereditary?

Good luck.

actually you can tell at birth .. or within a day ... the sexes if you know what you're looking for... as to the other though.. no you can hardly suss who's gonna be a good worker like that...

i wouldn't breed a ferret that has a known defect... thats not passing on good working genes .. thats irresponsible
