Badgers & Lambs

Recommended Posts

Was out ferreting the other day and bumped into the farmer who's land I have permmission on.

I mentioned to him that one of the warrens in a nearby wood looked like it had been taken over by foxes, he told me that it was badgers that had moved in and that last lambing season he had lost a couple of lambs to the badgers (he had to move the ewes and lambs to another field).

I didn't know that badgers killed lambs, farmer advised that the badgers tended to chew the lambs (especially their ears) and play with the carcass without actually eating any of the lamb, in his experience anyhow.

Just wondered if anyone knew of similar instances of badgers killing lambs or any other animals.

Yes they can and do take lambs  They are basically an agricultural pest but due to this countrys daft laws  they get away with things like lamb killing and scavenging afterbirths, something foxes are always blamed for but badgers can be just as guilty

tell him to make a complaint to the council (if a real problem they should and must get rid of them) or if you enjoy taking big risks, go and sort em yourself ;)

Very bad advice

Councils are under no legal obligation to kill badgers, and like everyone else, is legally unable to touch them or their setts.

I have known badgers that have killed lambs, especially when there is population pressure.

The sooner something is done about the disease ridden vermin, the better. Alas, I fear the cuddly bunny brigade will hold sway for sometime yet......
